By now, just about every Lamborghini fan knows about the interaction with Enzo Ferrari that led to Ferruccio Lamborghini to start up his own car company. He probably never thought that change his profession from building tractors to cars would spawn into a company with some of the most desirable cars on the planet, but it did. And today, Lamborghinis are more desirable that ever. So desirable that all 40 models of the upcoming Lamborghini Centenario – 20 in coupe form and 20 in convertible form – have sold out before the car has even made its public debut.
Conceived as a model to honor Ferruccio Lamborghini’s 100th birthday on April 28th, the car is scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March this year. That means we don’t have very long to wait, but even still, very little has been said about the Centenario. Speculation has it that the highly exclusive model will be powered by a 760-horsepower variant of the 6.5-liter V-12 from the Aventador. Additionally, word has it that Lambo is focusing on technology and connectivity with the Centenario. Maurizio Reggiani, the head of research and development at Lambo, has even said, “This will be the first time we have put so much content into one special car.”
The official designation of the Centenario remains a mystery at this point, but just about everybody has been calling it the LP770-4. According to Autocar, Stephan Winkelmann – the President and CEO of Lambo – has confirmed that a model name has been decided, and will be revealed in time. We’re assuming we’ll get the official name sometime closer to the Geneva Motor Show, so until then we just have to wait. Either way, unless you’re one of those select few that as coughed up the €2.2 million (nearly $2.39 million at current conversion rates,) you’re going to have a long wait if you still hope to get your hands on one.
