Fiat Tipo 6 Four Passenger Demi Tonneau

During the brass era of automobiles, from about 1900 to 1915, pretty much every car was a luxury car. Before Ford’s 1908 Ford Model T put the nation on wheels starting in 1907, automobiles were primarily seen as playthings for wealthy folks. Even Fiat, who’s known these days for more pedestrian economy cars and family vehicles, started out as a luxury manufacturer.

Fiat is one of the pioneers of the automotive age. The company built its first car in 1889. In addition to its forays into racing, Fiat was known for its luxury cars, and was one of the top importers of chassis into the U.S. Like most high-end cars of the time, early Fiats were sold as bare chassis and had coachbuilt bodies installed to the owners’ specifications. The bodies alone could cost as much as $4,000 in some cases. The first car to blend Fiat’s racing and luxury disciplines was the 60 HP, built from 1903 to 1907. The model range featured a pressed steel chassis and a massive 60 horsepower four-cylinder engine. The 50-60 evolved into the Tipo 6, like this example recently shown and sold at Pebble Beach. Popular with affluent American customers, the Tipo 6 was one of the most luxurious cars of its time.

Fiat was one of the best-known European manufacturers during the brass era. The company produced a range of vehicles, but it was the staggeringly expensive big-bore models that captured the attention of the public, and they were owned by royalty and dignitaries. The cars were low-production vehicles, with less than 100 built in most cases, and very few of them have survived the ensuing century.

Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM

It’s been less than two weeks since Mercedes-Benz unveiled the new 2016 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe, and Stuttgart has already announced that a new DTM car based on the new two-door is underway. The race car will be ready just in time for the 2016 Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters season as a competitor for the updated 2014 BMW M4 DTM and 2014 Audi RS5 DTM.

The new Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM is set to replace the current 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Coupe DTM, which the Germans have been using since 2012, when regulations changed to allow coupes instead of sedans.

"The new Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe will again set new standards for driving dynamics and design. So, the vehicle provides the ideal basis for our DTM car,” said head of Mercedes-AMG DTM, Ulrich Fritz. "I’m already looking forward to seeing the new Mercedes-AMG C63 DTM compete in 2016. Our aim with this vehicle is, of course, to continue the Mercedes-Benz success story in the DTM."

There’s no word as to when the new race car will be unveiled, but we should see it in the metal by the end of 2015 and in action in early 2016, before the next DTM season commences in May. For now, Mercedes-Benz has only released a handful of sketches of the car. Find out more below.

Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A Cabriolet

Best in Show at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this year was awarded to a 1924 Isotta Fraschini Tipo 8A owned by the Patterson Collection of Louisville, KY. The exotic-sounding Italian name should make it clear that this is a serious chunk of automobile, but not everyone knows just how serious. Though the name hasn’t matched the staying power of its peers, Isotta Fraschini was, back in the Roaring Twenties, the car one chose when a Duesenberg wasn’t ostentatious or extreme enough. Yeah, this car is that serious.

Back when the Duesenberg Model J was a high-level automotive object of lust that cost about four times the price of the average house, an Isotta Fraschini went for even more than that. These coachbuilt vehicles were the automotive equivalent of haute couture, sold as bare chassis and powertrains. The wealthy, high-profile buyers — among them, Clara Bow, Rudolph Valentino, William Randolph Hearst and Benito Mussolini — were free to select a coachbuilder to provide any body style that was desired. Even Rolls-Royce (who was also one of Isotta Fraschini’s competitors at the time) doesn’t get that bespoke anymore.

The Tipo 8A was introduced in 1924 as the successor to the Tipo 8. The chief difference was a much larger and more powerful engine. The car was a success among the glitterati, inspiring imitators and envy alike during the late Twenties and early Thirties.

Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet

As one of the biggest automakers in the world, Volkswagen’s got a lot on its plate, so much so that I can understand if some of its models don’t get nearly the same amount of attention as the others. But what’s happening with the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet is a real head-scratcher even by VW’s standards.

Volkswagen released the seventh-generation 2013 Volkswagen Golf Mk. VII in 2012. Since that time, the model has given birth to a handful of variants, including the 2015 Volkswagen Golf Sportwagen, the 2017 Volkswagon Golf Alltrack, and the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf, to name a few. Conspicuous by its absence in that list is the Golf Cabriolet, which has yet to receive a seventh-generation makeover. Well, Volkswagen has just announced the first details of the 2016 Golf Cabriolet and the key takeaway is…it’s still based on the sixth-generation 2009 Volkswagen Golf.

Yep, Volkswagen’s soldiering on with the Mk6 Golf Cabriolet in a dumbfounding attempt at trying to convince the market that there’s still some appeal left in a version of the Golf that has been replaced three years ago. I mean, really, Volkswagen?

The obvious reaction here is “why?” but if you look past the notable changes on the car and read between the lines of the announcements and press releases, it does appear that the company’s just releasing the Golf Cabriolet just for the sake of releasing it, as if there’s an absence of conviction in trying to make the model a viable competitor in a market that’s already teeming with new offerings from rival brands.

Volkswagen did give the new-old Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet some new exterior and interior digs. At least those things are worth something, right?

But overall, the 2016 Golf Cabriolet still has the look of a car that was built half-heartedly by a company that now doesn’t appear to be interested in building a seventh-generation-based Golf Cabriolet. Hopefully, that’s not the case, but with a move like this, it might very well be.

The 2016 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet will make its debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

BMW M2

The 2012 BMW 1 Series M was an amazingly fun and agile car, but its limited two-year run from 2010 to 2012 results in the 1 Series M being more of a unicorn than a track-slaying monster. Fortunately, the 2017 BMW M2 is on the way, and it should deliver a similar combination of high power and light weight as its predecessor, while being produced in larger numbers for more track enthusiasts to enjoy.

BMW has yet to confirm when the BMW M2 will be going into production, but the spy shots from last year do suggest the littlest M offering could be ready sooner rather than later. As is the case with most BMW products, it will most likely debut later this year before going on sale in Europe in early 2016 for the 2016 model year and eventually arriving in the U.S. as a 2017 model.

Tatra T87

History has been cruel to any number of cars, and even carmakers, but the story of Tatra and the T87 might bring a tear to the eyes of some enthusiasts. Tatra was a Czechoslovak company from the days when that was a thing. It is mostly famous for making the V570, the car Ferdinand Porsche is said to have ripped off for the design of the Volkswagen Beetle. A lawsuit from Tatra over the design was only stopped by the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia. But it was the T87 that was Tatra’s real masterpiece. Far from being a “people’s car,” the T87 was a marvel of design and technology at the time.

WWII was obviously hugely disruptive to a lot more than just the automotive industry, but it was ultimately also the reason why so few T87s were ever made. The car has never really managed to break out of the near-obscurity it was born into in 1936. It was produced after the war, all the way up until 1950, but it never really took off in terms of sales. But one showed up at Pebble Beach this year, and that’s always a good enough reason to sing its praises once again.

Smart Fortwo Cabriolet

Smart took the automotive world by surprise when it unveiled the ForTwo Cabrio at the 1999 Frankfurt Motor Show. A year later, the Germans launched the smallest production cabriolet, taking the micro car industry into a new era. It’s been 15 years since then and Smart has revealed the third-generation ForTwo Cabrio, which is set to break cover officially at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Based on the third-gen 2015 Smart ForTwo we already saw in 2014, the ForTwo Cabrio has been redesigned from the ground up. The styling is all-new inside and out, the chassis has been rebuilt for greater comfort, while the drivetrains are both more powerful and fuel-efficient.

"Our new smart cabrio really exudes joie de vivre in the city – which is what our brand stands for", said Dr. Annette Winkler, head of the Smart brand. "I am sure that we will delight our present 220,000 cabrio customers and win lots of new fans with this successful lifestyle icon."

The micro convertible will arrive on U.S. soil in the first half of 2016, a few months after it goes on sale in Europe. By the time it hits showrooms on this side of the Atlantic, it will join the ForTwo coupe, set to reach U.S. soil at the end of September 2015, and the 2015 Smart Fortwo Brabus Tailor Made program the brand announced earlier this year.

Suzuki Baleno

Suzuki introduced two new concept cars at the 2015 Geneva Auto Show: the 2015 Suzuki iM-4, which previewed a mini SUV, and the 2015 Suzuki iK-2, which provided a sneak peek of a new subcompact hatchback (supermini) for the European market. With the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show only a month away, the carmaker announced that the production version of the iK-2 concept is set to make its global debut in Germany using the Baleno name.

Details are slim as of this writing and Suzuki provided just one photo of the hatchback, but the Japanese did say the Baleno "harmoniously combines stylish design, spacious interior, and new technologies." (Same old, same old, so far.) The teaser also suggests the Baleno borrows heavily from the concept car, but also uses several styling features seen on the Swift.

As for the Baleno moniker, it’s not exactly new. Suzuki is actually reviving a name it used for a compact car it produced between 1995 and 2007. Sold with this name in Asia, Australia, and Europe, the Baleno was launched as the Cultus Crescent (later renamed Cultus) in Japan and marketed as the Esteem in North America. The original Baleno was offered as a three-door hatchback, four-door sedan and station wagon. In some markets, it was sold with Maruti and Chevrolet badges.

The full details will be revealed on September 15th in Frankfurt. Until then, let’s have a look at what we already know about the new Baleno.

Updated 08/31/2015: Suzuki dropped two new official images for the upcoming Baleno concept car which will be unveiled next month in Frankfurt.

Hyundai N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo

The Vision Gran Turismo project has provided quite the list of poster-worthy concept vehicles from some of the biggest automakers in the world. The 2015 Volkswagen GTi Supersport looked positively gnarly. The 2015 SRT Tomahawk was sheer and utter madness. And don’t even get me started on the 2015 Chevrolet Chaparral 2X. To this day, I still can’t wrap my head around that thing. Today, though, isn’t the day to reminisce on what’s already been launched. Today is the day all of us welcome another virtual concept to the Vision Gran Turismo roster. It comes by way of Hyundai, and it’s called the N 2025.

There aren’t that many details about the N 2025 out yet. The N 2025 will make its debut on Sept. 15th at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The company did drop some teaser photos of the concept before the covers are officially pulled. Best remember, though, as exciting as it is to see the N 2025 in all its glory, don’t expect to see it as a production race car. Not today, not tomorrow, and certainly not in 2025.

The "N" in the concept’s name is only a mere mention of the company’s upcoming "N" performance division. Sure, the concept might include some designs and technologies that Hyundai could implement in the future, but like all the VGT concepts, the N 2025 is meant more for the virtual world than the real one.

Top 5 SUVs of 2015

Gas prices won’t always be so low, but while they are, automakers are taking full advantage of the revived popularity of SUVs and crossovers. As such, every mainstream automaker now offers at least one type of SUV or crossover, and even high-end brands like Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini are getting in on the action. On top of that, the overall quality of these vehicles has improved immensely since their initial popularity took hold in the 1990s.

As if defining the “best” SUVs and crossovers wasn’t already hard enough, the vast diversity, improved quality and sheer volume of vehicles on the market these days makes it almost impossible to narrow down the list to just five, but here goes. On a purely subjective level, I’ve chosen my Top 5 SUVs and crossovers that are currently on sale, but be sure to sound off in the comments which vehicles you think I missed.

Carmakers Spend Billions on Technologies That Some Buyers Disregard

Carmakers love to brag about the technology that they can cram into cars, and any press release announcing a new or updated model will be accompanied by a long list of the advanced features it offers. This is especially true when it comes to infotainment technology, and this makes sense since this is the technology that the customer is likely to have the direct contact with. But a new survey from J.D. Power suggests that much of that may be a waste of time, as customers aren’t using the features very much.

The survey tracked the use of 33 different technological features being sold on new cars and found that at least 20 percent of customers weren’t using 16 of them at all. Among the least used features were in-vehicle concierge (43% never used); mobile routers (38%); automatic parking systems (35%); head-up displays (33%); and built-in apps (whatever that means) (32%). In essentially every case of a technology not being used, the reason given was that the owners did not find it useful, and only had it because it was bundled with other features. The survey was for those in the first 90 days of ownership, as after that, it’s generally found that features owners haven’t used yet won’t ever be used.

2016 Subaru BRZ Gets Price Cut

Though the Subaru BRZ and Mazda Miata are very different cars, they share a customer base. Whatever the differences in body style, both of these sports cars appeal to driving purists, who enjoy a level of connectedness that goes beyond the average commuter. That may be at least part of the reason that, closely following the launch of the all-new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru has announced a price drop for the BRZ.

The $25,695 MSRP of the 2016 Subaru BRZ is $300 below the 2015 model. Annual updates are limited to new options and equipment, including the Subaru Starlink Multimedia System, whose 6.2-inch touch screen enables smartphone-like gesture input. A backup camera is now standard as well. The 200 horsepower, 2.0 liter boxer four-cylinder engine, standard limited-slip differential and lightweight body have not changed.

Subaru has lowered prices by approximately the same amount across the board, so the Alcantara-trimmed Limited starts at $27,395 with a six-speed manual and $28,495 with the six-speed automatic. The BRZ Limited is also equipped with dual-zone climate control and heated seats.

Final Death Toll From GM's Defective Ignition Switches is Debatable

General Motors has claimed that 124 deaths were the result of faulty ignition switches. The number is almost 10 times more than the 13 deaths the company admitted to about a year ago, but 214 short of the total 338 death claims filed. The findings come from an internally appointed review team that considered over 4,300 death and injury claims.

As you might expect, not everyone is satisfied with GM’s findings. The Detroit Times spoke with the executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, Clarence Ditlow, who said the “burden of proof on the individual consumer was always too high,” and that it was impossible for some would-be claimants to produce sufficient documentation.

“The entire program was designed to get [sic] help get Congress and the Justice Department off GM’s back,” Ditlow told The Detroit Times. “The one thing is clear that we will never know how many people were killed or injured because it goes back so far.”

In addition to the death claims paid, the General Motors compensation fund will also pay out 274 injury claims, but says there are still a few left to review. Of the 4,342 total claims filed, 338 of which were for deaths, about 91 percent were rejected. So far, GM has paid about $280 million in claims and expects that number to climb to $625 million. Several claims have been rejected or not yet accepted.

Venturi VBB-3 Achieves Land Speed Record, Doesn't Reach Top Speed

The quest to set the first new electric vehicle land-speed record since 2010 is ongoing. The 2014 Venturi Buckeye Bullet 3 hit a one-mile average speed of 240 mph, which was good enough for a new category record, but well short its estimated top speed of 373 mph.

The attempt took place at the Bonneville Salt Flats where conditions have been difficult for the last three years or so. The long-running SpeedWeeks event was cancelled this year due to heavy rains in July, which left standing water on the track. Conditions didn’t improve much in August for VBB-3 and driver Roger Schroer. "In eleven years here I have never driven on such a difficult track,” said Schroer in a press release. “The car was sliding on the surface from one side to the other due to soft spots and bumps."

Preparations at the track started on August 15th, with speed testing beginning a few days later. Poor conditions caused by flooding meant the track was shortened from 12 to 10 miles, but even the shorter distance was still wet and bumpy in places. Initial runs were hampered by severe vibrations, causing components to rattle loose and disrupt the drivetrain. Finally, during the last attempt on the 21st, the front cooling system tank was punctured, and the team decided to pack it in and try again another day.

The Venturi Buckeye Bullet is a joint project between Venturi Automobiles in Monaco and the Ohio State University Center for Automotive Research (hence ‘Buckeye’ in the name). VBB-3 is the fourth electric streamliner built by the two partners, and is powered by two electric motors that produce a combined 3,000 horsepower, making it the most powerful electric car in the world.

Mercedes CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake

The CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake will be unveiled in Geneva in 2915, and Mercedes has revealed its preliminary information today.

With an affordable price tag and matching good looks, the 2014 to 2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA became a popular item as soon as it hit showrooms. That success has inspired the Germans to expand the CLA lineup to include a beefed-up 2014 CLA45 AMG and a CLA Shooting Brake. With the former already on sale since the 2014 model year, Mercedes is finally rolling out wagon versions — Shooting Brakes, as the company likes to call them — for both four-door coupe models. The CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake breaks cover as we enter the 2015 model year, with its public debut set to take place at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

With the CLA45 AMG already available in U.S. dealerships, the Shooting Brake model is as familiar as it gets, with only the longer roofline and sloping tailgate setting it apart from its sedan sibling. The AMG-badged wagon is both powerful and fast, despite being a massive departure from AMG’s traditional V-8 and V-12 powerplant strategy with its 2.0-liter four-banger. You might as well call it the CLS63 AMG Shooting Brake’s baby brother; no one will mind. Read on for the full details.

Updated 08/28/2015: For the 2016 model year, the CLA 45 AMG Shooting Brake receives the same output as the facelifted 2015 Mercedes-AMG A45 AMG, meaning that it gets to play with 381 horsepower instead of 360 horsepower, while the 0-62 mph acceleration takes place in 4.3 seconds.

Fiat 500L - Driven

Fiat has been building a market for itself since the 500 debuted for 2012 here in the U.S. Now the brand has three main models, two of which ride on the same platform but cater to different crowds. The 2016 Fiat 500X offers a somewhat rugged package with a tad more ground clearance and AWD. Its stable mate, the 2015 Fiat 500L offers a more urban experience, complete with cutesy looks and a functional interior.

I recently got to spend some quality time with the 500L in my day-to-day life. Obviously its larger size, four real doors, and seating for five provided a much more family-friendly ride than the previous two Fiats I’ve tested – the Fiat 500 and 2012 Fiat 500 Cabrio, both in the sporty Abarth trim.

The term “large” almost seems like an understatement when sitting inside for the first time. Its tall roof, wide stance, and long body make the car feel much bigger than it actually is. Its interior space feels almost MPV-like. Funny it should feel that way because the 500L also shares its platform with the 2015 Ram ProMaster City.

Unlike the ProMaster City, the 500L comes powered by the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder – a very prevalent engine in the Fiat lineup. Three transmission options are offered, the first being a six-speed manual and the two remaining being six-speed automatics, one of which is a dual-clutch unit.

Five trim levels are offered and span the gap between rental ready and leather-lined. My tester walked the middle ground as a Trekking model, which offers a bit more rugged exterior without crossing into the 500X’s market. Still, the 500L offers plenty of practicality without sacrificing quirkiness.

You Can Win a Ural Gear Up With Custom Camping Gear

Iron and Air magazine is giving away a used Ural Gear-Up as part of its promotional campaign this year. Yes, you read that right, it’s a used bike…sort of. The folks from Iron and Air plan on taking the customized Gear Up on a six-week tour of the American West, and putting 10,000 miles on it before the drawing on October 15, 2015. Therefore, I guess it isn’t really all that used; just broken in is all. Look at it this way; if anything is going to shake off, it will happen on their watch, and what a great provenance to tell your friends. The winner gets a three-year warranty on the bike, so there ya’ go.

The grand-prize winner will get the classic Ural Gear-up, complete with sidecar and all the bells and whistles as well as LED duel sidecar lights, diamond pin-tuck upholstery, jerry-can rack and more. It doesn’t stop there, either – the sidecar comes stuffed with camping goodies from Nemo, Good-to-Go, Goal Zero and Hennessy Hammock, plus a GoPro camera with which to document your off-road shenanigannery, and post it up on YouTube. (Remember: video, or it didn’t happen!)

The Gear-Up is a curious machine, in that it is one of the few sidecars in the world that comes with the option of engaging the sidecar wheel for true, dual rear-wheel drive, which works really well. If you watch some Ural videos, you rarely see the bike on pavement. Folks are usually off-road and maybe even out on some frozen tundra somewhere, tearing up the countryside with impunity. You don’t play in those conditions on just any machine.

Mazda3

Standing out in the world of compacts is no easy feat. The corner-cutting measures it takes to offer a product at a competitive price in this segment can quickly demote a car to drab background filler. Throw in the customer’s demand to “do it all,” from sporting fun to commuting practicality, and what you’re left with can often feel like too much of a compromise. That’s not the case with the Mazda3, which combines standout styling, top-notch safety, cutting-edge interior appointment and fantastic driving dynamics into one cohesive package, all for an aggressive price. For 2016, Mazda kept all those characteristics, but upped the ante with a variety of new features, both standard and optional.

The 3 was originally introduced in 2003 as a replacement for the Protégé, with a second generation unveiled five years later. Now in its third gen, the 3 continues to be one of the best compact cars on the market. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Automotive News reports annual U.S. sales of the Mazda3 have overtaken gains in the compact market as a whole, with growth of 5.2 percent compared to a 3.1 percent average for all other segment models.

So then – what makes it so good?

Citroen Cactus M Concept

Citroen’s Cactus lineup has done nothing but make headlines since the 2013 Citroen Cactus Concept turned a lot of heads at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s hard to believe that it’s only been two years, but in that span, the Cactus lineup has given rise to a production model (the 2014 Citroen C4 Cactus), a separate prototype (the 2015 Citroen Aircross Concept), and the title of 2015 World Car Design of the Year at the New York International Auto Show back in April 2015. One might even say that the success of the model played a huge part in Citroen’s decision to build a new prototype, called the Cactus M Concept. And in a nice twist of fate, it’s also making its in debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 17, 2015.

Not much is known about the Cactus M Concept at this point, apart from a very brief description from Citroen, describing the model as a fresh take of the C4 Cactus that also pays homage to the Mehari, a light utility vehicle the French automaker produced from 1968 to 1988.

The allusion to the Mehari is a nice starting point on how I imagine the M Concept is going to look like. Spanish car website Actualidad Motor then followed that up by publishing images of what appears to be the Cactus M Concept right smack in the middle of a promo shoot.

Citroen also released a teaser photo of a surfboard being sprayed in a paint booth. The M Concept doesn’t make an appearance in the teaser photo but piecing together everything I’ve seen and been told about this concept, I’m putting my money on a topless concept vehicle that’s meant to be used on beach trips and other outdoor activities.

The era of the true crapcan went out around 10 years ago, and any new car or truck you can buy these days is, at heart, a decent vehicle. It may not always seem like it, but we’re currently in the middle of an automotive renaissance of sorts. Like most other categories of cars, it’s been evolve or die for SUVs and crossovers. The competition is stiffer than ever, and that has driven dramatic improvements in the power, handling, ride, design and capability of these vehicles.

That doesn’t mean that some vehicles aren’t behind the curve, of course. And in some cases, they’re way behind the curve.

So why do some SUVs fall short? Sometimes it’s a matter of taste. Consumer desires can shift practically overnight, and it’s easy for a manufacturer to get caught out. When gas prices spiked a couple of years ago, large, V-8-powered sport utes became overnight liabilities. Similarly, the rollover controversy that struck the Ford Explorer in the late 1990s was bad news for tall, body-on-frame sport-utes. In recent years, consumer preference has turned toward more car-like crossover vehicles that split the difference between SUVs and cars, offering the best of both worlds — a move that must have folks at Suzuki and Isuzu (who attempted similar vehicles before it was popular) shaking their heads.

10 Carmakers Face a Class-Auction Lawsuit Over Keyless Entry Systems

Labaton Sucharow Lawfirm out of New York and Hagens Bermen law firm out of California has filed a class-action lawsuit against 10 major auto manufacturers. The purpose of the lawsuit it to obtain a court order requiring Mercedes-Benz, Kia, Honda, Nissan, Hyundai, Bentley, Volkswagen, BMW, Toyota and Ford to install an auto-shutdown feature on models that have a keyless ignition system. According to Martis Alex – the head attorney at Labaton Sucharow — cars that don’t have an automatic shutdown feature pose a risk of carbon-monoxide poisoning if a forgetful driver leaves the vehicle running in a garage.

The lawsuit goes on to state that automakers have known about this risk for years. It states that some have begun equipping new models with an automatic shutdown feature, but have done nothing to rectify the situation with older models. Apparently, according to some sources, there has been a total of 13 deaths related to carbon-monoxide poisoning from vehicles with keyless ignition systems. We’re not sure how this one is going to turn out, but keep reading to hear my thoughts on the issue.

Kia Sportage

Kia has been caught in the midst of testing its next generation Sportage crossover on the frozen roads of Northern Sweden. Our spy photographers grabbed several clean shots of the South Korean automaker’s latest refresh of the Sportage, though it was covered in heavy camouflage. Despite the black padding, there are plenty of details showing through.

This marks the Sportage’s first major refresh since 2011 – itself a major renewal of the crossover thanks to Hyundai/Kia’s hiring of Peter Schreyer, Audi’s former designer. Now for 2016, the fourth generation Sportage appears to be receiving an updated interpretation of Schreyer’s “tiger nose” design. The side profile and roofline of the Sportage seems to be unchanged, with the front and rear fascias getting the bulk of attention.

The new design appears to be heavily influenced by the KX3 concept. That’s especially true in the 2016 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S-like headlights and the lower grille’s larger opening. The Sportage’s rear end gets LED taillights while keeping its bumper-mounted turn signals and backup lights.

Updated 08/28/2015: The 2016 Sportage’s exterior has already been revealed in official photos, but our spy photographers also sent us a batch with the model caught completely undisguised on the road. Check them out in the gallery!

Rokon Trail-Breaker

Back in 1958, Charles Fehn introduced the world to his two-wheel-drive motorcycle, aptly named the Trailmaker. Mr. Fehn designed it as a utility vehicle with serious, if slow, off-road capabilities, and his bikes became popular with hunters and farmers as something of a mule. Fast-forward to 2016, and you can see that the new Rokon Trail-Breaker is one acorn that didn’t fall far from the tree. Same basic front-wheel-drive system, function and overall look of the original, this ride provides true off-road capability and can perform a utility role in an agricultural or campground setting.

Porsche Pledges to Race in LMP1 Until 2018

No manufacturer has won the 24 Hours of Le Mans more times than Porsche. But Porsche’s dominance of top-tier endurance racing through the ’70s and ’80s (as well as a bit in the ’90s) gave way to the company concentrating its efforts on GT3 and GT2 racing, leaving outright wins to Audi. Half of the field in any given GT3-class race is now made up of Porsche 911s, but it seems that Porsche has gotten bored with this, as the company came back to LMP1 racing last year and took a 1-2 win at Le Mans this year.

The question following this win was whether Porsche was making a serious return to LMP1 or if this was just to prove that Porsche still had what it takes to win, sort of like what Bentley did in 2003. Porsche has now given official word that the LMP1 racing program, centered around the 2015 Porsche 919 Hybrid prototype, will continue until 2018. Porsche is surely pushing for those three more seasons to translate into three more outright wins at Le Mans, but Audi is definitely going to have a thing or two say about that, and we’re likely to see some very close races in the next few years.
