Skoda Octavia vRS

For a while, Skoda was soldering on as a dated company that produced less-than-modern vehicles, but all that changed in 1996 when the brand introduced the Skoda Octavia. The car has since gone through a couple of redesigns and, for the 2017 model year, it went through a facelift. This facelift brought an even more modern design outside while upping the Octavia’s interior game and bringing some updates to the powertrain department as well. Skoda revealed the facelifted Octavia back in November of 2016, and just over a month later, the brand announced a range-topping version of its resident four-door: the Octavia vRS. The vRS brings a more aggressive set of fascias on the outside, some performance-focused tweaks to the chassis and suspension, and a small increase in power that’s enough to make it the “fastest series-production model in the history of the Octavia.”

Needless to say, Skoda is really excited about its new vRS, and in all honesty, it probably should be. But, you really need a trained eye and a good sense of logic to get through all of the PR talk that comes along with the announcement for this new “performance” model. Highlights do include an increase in 10 horsepower over that of the standard model, a slightly lowered suspension system, and it even comes stock with a pair of 18-inch wheels that can be swapped out for 19-inch models if you desire to do so.

All told, the vRS looks to be a fairly decent little compact car, and its looks certainly float the bill for something that will be passed off as a range-topping model. But, is there more to it than what meets the eye? Well, let’s dive on in and talk a little more about it.

2018 Volkswagen Golf R Comes With More Power And Better Looks

In November 2016, Volkswagen launched the facelifted, seventh-generation Golf, unveiling all versions of the popular hatchback save for the range-topping R. With 2017 just around the corner, the German car maker has quietly revealed the Golf R too. As expected, the beefed-up hatchback arrives with a slightly more powerful engine and an updated exterior.

Design-wise, the R model received the same updates as the rest of the Golf lineup. Up front, there’s a revised radiator grille with a chromed lower strip that extends through the new LED daytime running lights. The LED headlamps are also new and included in the standard package. Below, there’s a redesigned bumper with a larger opening in the middle and revised side vents with black-painted surrounds. The new bumper gives the Golf R a more aggressive stance compared to the outgoing model, which looked rather bland. Around back, notable changes include taillights with a new LED pattern and larger lamps in the bumper. The hatchback also rides on new, double-five-spoke wheels.

Inside, the R carried over with almost no changes in terms of styling, but got a wide array of new tech, starting with a new touchscreen with gesture control. There’s also a new fully digital instrument cluster measuring 12.3 inches and offering five different information profiles. Other novelties include the Media Control App, which provides an infotainment interface for tablets and smartphones, the Security & Service package with various apps and access to immediate assistance in the even for a crash or a breakdown, and an online anti-theft alarm.

Under the hood, the turbocharged, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine received a mild power hike. Much like the Seat Leon Cupra, the Golf R now benefits from extra 10 PS (10 horsepower), which takes the total output to 310 PS (306 horsepower). The hatchback needs 4.6 seconds to hit 62 mph from a standing start on its way to a top speed of 155 mph. European pricing starts from €40,675 for the hatchback with the manual transmission and from €44,800 for the Variant wagon version with the DSG. U.S. pricing information is not yet available.

Porsche 911 R Steve McQueen Tribute Edition

The Porsche 911 R caused quite a stir when it made its debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show back in March. It was, in a lot of ways, the 911 variant that Porsche purists had been clamoring for. It may not be the fastest and most powerful variant of the 911 – take a bow 911 Turbo S, that’s still you – but in terms of pure driving pleasure, the 911 R holds a backseat to no one. Alas, Porsche only released 1,000 units of the special edition 911 R and you’d be hard-pressed to find one in the market today. Fortunately, one of the original owners of the 911 R has decided to make it even more special by turning it into a personal tribute to Steve McQueen and sending it back to the German automaker to have it auctioned. And so, here it is, the 911 R Steve McQueen Tribute, a one-off creation that pays homage to arguably one of the most iconic Hollywood leading men and professional racer in history.

The super exclusive 911 R comes with a host of unique features, not the least of which are specific details attributed to McQueen himself. It also gets a lot of love from Porsche Exclusive with the myriad of options and accessories that were given to it. Suffice to say, this unique 911 R Steve McQueen Tribute was designed to be a legitimate one-off. About the only downside, if you can even call it that, is that it doesn’t receive any power enhancements. Would’ve been nice to have more power to play with for a true and legitimate driver’s car.

Oh, and don’t expect the 911 R Steve McQueen Tribute to come cheap. It’s unclear if it can fetch the same $184,900 price tag of a brand new 911 R since it already has a previous owner. But taking into account its one-off exclusivity and the name attached to it, I expect this particular 911 R to breeze past the $200,000 barrier when it’s auctioned off by RM Sotheby’s on February 8, 2017. The good news is that 25 percent of the car’s auction price above its €25,000 ($26,120) minimum reserve will be given towards research for curing cancer in children.

Volkswagen I.D. Concept Van

Caught red handed cheating on emissions tests, Volkswagen is still struggling to obtain settlements in the "Dieselgate" scandal. However, the German firm is also looking to create a more sustainable future for itself by embracing electrification. Having announced a plan to launch several EVs over the next few years, Volkswagen is unveiling an increasing number of concept cars that feature electric motors instead of standard gasoline or diesel mills. One such vehicle is the I.D., which made its official debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show. Only two months have passed since then, and VW will unveil a new electric concept, this time around at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show.

Described as a "multi-functional vehicle for a new era," the car in question doesn’t have a name yet, but Volkswagen confirmed that it will be part of the I.D. family. This means it will also be based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB) that Volkswagen wants to launch in the future, as well as gain many of the features seen the first I.D. concept.

Volkswagen also mentioned that the new concept vehicle "forges links between the legendary origins of the Volkswagen brand and its electrifying future" and that "it combines ample space for travel with a long electric driving range, to usher a new feeling of freedom — with zero emissions — and a new era of mobility."

There’s no word as to when this concept will move into production, but given that the first I.D. is set to hit dealerships by 2020, the van shown here should follow soon after that. Stay tuned for updates on this car from the Detroit Auto Show.

Bentley Continental GT V8 S Black Edition

If you’ve ever come across any of Bentley’s Black Edition models, you know that the British luxury car brand spares no expense in dressing them up, right down to seemingly inconsequential details like a 12 o’clock red stripe on the steering wheel. Prepare yourselves then for more Black Edition goodness from Bentley because the automaker has just introduced the latest iteration of that series, only this time, it’s for the Continental GT V8 S.

The vehicle is predictably called the Continental GT V8 S Black Edition and like model from which it’s based on, it’s available in both coupe and convertible body styles. The objective of the Black Edition has always been grounded on creating a sportier look for the Continental GT V8 S. It’s a little more appropriate with this particular model since the GT V8 S is touted as a version of the Continental that’s been tuned for power and performance.

So the Continental GT V8 S Black Edition is essentially a marriage of upgrades meant to give the model a comprehensive lineup of enhancements. If the formula sounds familiar, it’s because Bentley has been doing it for quite some time now and the results, more often than not, have been overwhelmingly positive.

Does the special edition Continental GT V8 S follow in the path created by its Black Edition predecessors? That’s what we’re about to find out, although based on first impressions, I’m confident that this new model won’t have any problems making a name for itself.

McLaren Offers Aftermarket Personalization Options For Its Super Series Models

McLaren counts itself as one of the most exclusive brands in the world and that status comes with certain standards and expectations. One such expectation is to have an extensive personalization division that can distinctive and dramatic design offerings that further enhance the exclusivity of its models. This is where McLaren Special Operations (MSO) takes center stage and just in time for the holidays and the coming new year, MSO is loading up on a lot of new extra options and accessories for its MSO Defined line that’s poised to take McLaren personalization to a whole new level.

The new wave of MSO options area available for current and future owners of any of McLaren’s Super Series models, which includes a wide range of models that run from the 12C to the 675LT. The objective here is to give these new models a fresh shine, so to speak. Whether it’s through exterior upgrades or interior amenities, the objective has always been the same: make these models more personalized to reflect the tastes and preferences of its owners.

For the exterior, McLaren Super Series owners can expect even more carbon fiber options because carbon fiber is awesome. Among the notable additions include a carbon fiber rear diffuser that provides improved airflow and weight reduction. There’s also new carbon fiber mirror arms that can be combined with matching mirror casings and just in case it doesn’t get mentioned, carbon fiber louvered front fenders are also on the MSO Defined menu now. This particular component is an important one since it saves close to 0.5 kilos (1.1 pounds) over the standard version. It’s also a nice nod to the automaker’s storied history in motor racing, which made good use of the material. Last but certainly not leased is a carbon fiber hood that provides visual and performance enhancements for any McLaren Super Series model that gets them.

Move to the interior and the carbon fiber treatment continues in waves. Carbon fiber vent bezels and sill tops are particularly noteworthy, in large part because they add more emphasis to the sporty and driver-focused architecture of a McLaren’s interior. The same can be said for the carbon fiber steering wheel and extended carbon fiber gear shift paddles. Not only are they awesome to look at, but their lightweight nature helps drop even more pounds from the car’s weight. Remember, a lighter McLaren is a faster McLaren.

The extended menu of upgrades included in the McLaren Super Series MSO Defined range should serve McLaren owners well, especially when they’re in the market for more exclusive options to add to their already exclusive supercars. Why even bother go the aftermarket route when McLaren’s MSO Defined range has what you’re looking for, right?

All Eyes On Bavaria As BMW Promises iNext Autonomous Vehicle By 2021

The auto industry is just like any major business segment in that it’s made up of “followers” and “movers and shakers.” Followers are those who prefer that the industry chart a definitive course before getting on board with whatever new evolution arrives. By contrast, movers are shakers are those who define the industry moving forward. They are those who plot the course of business and are usually ahead of everybody else. BMW qualifies in the “movers and shakers” category, in large part because it has never been afraid to stake its name in the pursuit of development.

The German automaker is doing it again with the announcement that it’s iNext autonomous vehicle has been scheduled for a release in 2021. As many of you know, BMW’s iNext project has been talked about in the past, often in vague terms. Not much is known about the car at this point other than it’s going to be autonomous and that it’s going to be the first of a wave of autonomous vehicles that BMW plans to build in the future. The latest development here is the timetable, something that Bimmer has been coy about. But now it’s official out; the iNext is now scheduled for release in 2021, or one year after BMW goes full-on electric with its core lineup.

With the long-term goal now established, getting there now becomes the tricky part. BMW says that it’s well equipped to hit its target, thanks in large part to its new research and development campus in Munich that will serve as ground zero for its electric, connectivity, and autonomous projects. Once the campus is running on full volume, it will employ more than 2,000 people, a large swath of whom will join the 600 employees that BMW already has in its ranks, most of whom are already working on the company’s automated driving software.

Not much is known about the iNext project, but it has been reported that a lot of BMW’s future technologies could be used by the car, including the HoloActive Touch system that the German automaker is introducing at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show. Cross your fingers then that the technology’s debut goes on as planned.

In the meantime, we can at least expect BMW to create a new work structure among its employees with the goal of combining specific expertise in certain areas of development, which in turn could create a more efficient response and collaboration among these teams.

BMW M2 "GTS" by Evolve Automotive

The BMW M2 has arguably turned in one of the most impressive first-year runs of any car in recent years. That’s saying a lot considering that we’ve seen plenty of outstanding models make their debuts in 2016. But the M2 is on a level of its own, and that’s not even counting the number of aftermarket companies that have been seduced by its charms. So as we prepare to close the year on a high note, it’s only appropriate that we showcase one final tuning program for the M2. This one comes from Evolve Automotive, a U.K.-based tuner whose work on the M2 helps the coupe increase its output to 401 horsepower and 450 pound-feet of torque.

Evolve Automotive isn’t a particularly well-known tuner in the aftermarket circle. But you wouldn’t know it based on this program. The kit itself is comprised of new aerodynamic components and a well-spotted engine tune that brings out the necessary power that can compete with other tuners. The power numbers may not be up to what other aftermarket companies have done, but those torque figures are right where they should be, especially for a car like the M2 that can blitz off the line like nobody’s business.

The tuner even christened its kit as the “GTS,” an appropriate name for a program that can release GTS-level performance out of the M2. Too bad that BMW has yet to release its own M2 GTS, although if rumors of such a car are accurate, we can hope for the best that the coming year will see the car finally come to fruition.

For now though, Evolve Automotive’s “GTS” kit for the BMW M2 will have to do. Good thing is that the tuner did as good a job as it can to make the program live up to our expectations for what the GTS is going to turn out to be.

Uber In Hot Water Over Stabbing And Attempted Robbery Incidents

Christmas is literally a few days away and you would think that the festive spirit of the holiday season is putting everyone in a good mood. But alas, the world doesn’t work that way. Uber found that out the hard way after two of its drivers found themselves involved in two separate criminal investigations in Florida and Michigan, respectively.

The incident in Florida involved 29-year old Uber driver Namique Anderson, who shot an armed robber attempting to steal from him and his passenger. According to reports, Anderson’s Uber car was cut off by a Dodge Caravan with the robber getting out and brandishing two firearms with the intent to steal from Anderson and his passenger. Turns out, the Uber driver had his own firearm in the car, which he used to shoot and kill the robber.

Florida police have been on top of the investigation and have said that the Uber driver is unlikely to face charges since he acted in self-defense. Unfortunately for Anderson, Uber has specific policies that prohibit drivers from carrying firearms when they’re operating their cars, even if the driver has a license to carry a gun, which Anderson had.

The ride-service company has not yet made a decision on a potential punishment on Anderson for violating its policies.

The incident isn’t what Uber had in mind this close to Christmas, but at least its driver is not expected to face charges. The same, sadly, cannot be said for 23-year old Uber driver Jacob Allemon, who was arrested after stabbing his passenger because the passenger, a 49-year old man who was with his wife, “disrespected” his car.

According to reports, Allemon drove the couple to a shopping center parking lot, where he ordered them to get out. The victim asked that the driver to wait until another ride arrived, only for the request to turn into an altercation where Allemon stabbed the victim five times. Fortunately, the none of the stabs were fatal and the victim, after being treated at a local hospital for wounds to the chest, back, and face was released the next day.

Allemon was arrested and charged with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder. Likewise, he has also been banned from the app with an Uber spokeswoman commenting that the description of the incident was “appalling.”

Mercedes-Maybach S650 Cabriolet

Revived by Mercedes-Benz in 1997 after more than five decades since it stopped building automobiles, the Maybach brand and its modern limousines, the 57 and 62, were received with great enthusiasm. However, both cars were seen as slightly fancied-up versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class as soon as they hit the market and the company’s sales expectations were never met. When it was shut down in 2012, Maybach has only sold around 3,000 units. By comparison, Rolls-Royce sold more than 2,700 vehicles in 2010. The luxury brand was once again revived in 2015, but this time around as Mercedes-Maybach and as a sub-brand of the S-Class model. Two four-door models were launched immediately, following by sleek looking concept coupe. Although the latter has yet to be confirmed for production as of December 2016, Mercedes did launch a convertible version based on the S-Class. It’s called the Mercedes-Maybach S650 and its the first Maybach drop-top since the 1930s.

Although based on the standard S-Class inside and out, the Maybach S650 is actually pretty unique in the lineup. Its body features are heavily based on the AMG S65 model, thus having a sportier appearance, while the interior comes with bespoke leather upholstery and numerous accessories. Under the hood, the convertible is more than just a standard S-Class, using the most powerful engine available for the nameplate at this point. This makes the S650 the quickest and most powerful Maybach ever built.

The luxury convertible is also available in very limited numbers, with just 300 units to be built and sold globally. Naturally, these specs also make it highly expensive, to the point where a Maybach could cost more than its Rolls-Royce competitor. Find out more about it in my comprehensive review below.

Audi Q8 E-tron Concept

Audi seems to think it can create a new niche in the full-sized vehicle segment by introducing a vehicle with SUV proportions inside, and almost coupe-like proportions outside. We first heard of the R8 name way back in 2012 when Audi filed a trademark for it, along with other names like R6, S2, S9, and RS1, among others. Since then, the name has been associated with Audi’s dreams of electric architecture and has even been said to be arriving in 2019 – even here in the United States. More recently, however, around July of 2016, we laid eyes on a weird coupe-ish SUV prototype that just had to be the Audi Q8. Well, our suspicions of that prototype have pretty much been confirmed now that Audi has released the teaser photos of the Audi R8 e-Tron Concept that you see here.

Set to debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Audi has said very little about the concept, but it is supposedly near-production ready. If that really is the case, it’s quite likely that we’ll see the prototype testing at least once more over the next year, and the production model will likely debut at the 2018 Detroit Auto Show in preparation for its official release for the 2019 model year. The concept we see here is a preview of a model that will take on the likes of the BMW X6 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe.

We still have some time before we get to see the real production model, but we’ll be seeing the Concept in the metal in just a couple of weeks. So, in the meantime, let’s take a look at these teaser photos and talk a little more about it.

Scania R450 used in Berlin Terror Attack

Terrorists have again used a commercial semi truck to commit acts of mass violence, this time in Germany’s capital city of Berlin on December 19, 2016. The truck drove through a crowded town square full of people shopping the Christmas booths set up along a pedestrian area, killing 12 people and injuring 48 more. The act was done in a similar fashion as the truck attack in Nice, France on July 14, 2016.

The dozens of photos taken of the scene clearly show the horrific aftermath. Also clearly visible is the make of the semi truck. It is a Scania R450 with the R-Sleeper-Topline cab. Scania, a Swedish brand with a rich history, is 70-percent owned by Volkswagen and 17 percent owned by MAN, which itself is also heavily owned by Volkswagen.

The particular truck features a short wheelbase, and according to specifications on Scania’s website, likely has a 6x4 drive configuration, meaning the four rear tires drive the truck while the front tires only steer. The full-length trailer has six wheels, three on each side, and has canvas sides. The truck was reportedly stolen from the Polish trucking company Ariel Zurawski, named after its founder and current owner.

Reports say it was Zurawski’s cousin who was operating the truck on a route from Italy to Berlin when it was purportedly hijacked. Zurawski’s cousin was found shot to death inside the truck when authorities reached the scene. The hijacker has not been found. The truck was loaded with 25 tons of steel.

We will update this story if further details come to light regarding the truck.

Ferrari SP 275 RW Competizione

Although Ferrari is now mostly famous for its mid-engined sports cars, Maranello built front-engined vehicles only until 1966, when the Lamborghini Miura and its mid-ship layout changed the supercar industry. But, even though it shifted to mid-engine designs, Ferrari continued to build front-engine cars and the current lineup includes three such examples as of 2017: the F12berlinetta, GTC4Lusso, and the California. A spiritual successor to the iconic 250 series (built between 1953 and 1964), the F12berlinetta has already spawned the F12tdf, a limited-edition tribute to the legendary Tour de France, an automobile race that Maranello dominated from 1956 through 1964. Come 2017 and Ferrari launched the SP 275 RW Competizione, a radically redesigned F12 that pays homage to the 275 GTB.

Built as a one-off and designed by Ferrari’s Styling Center with help from Pininfarina, the SP 275 RW Competizione brings together the modern stance of the F12berlinetta and the iconic styling cues of the 275 GTB. Introduced in 1964, the 275 GTB replaced the famous 250 GTO on both the road and the race track. Produced until 1968 in 970 units, the 275 series run also included the race-spec 275 GTB/C, the 275 GTS convertible, and the four-cam 275 GTB/4 and GTB/4 NART. All versions were powered by the iconic 3.3-liter V-12 "Colombo" engine which, in some models, produced in excess of 300 horsepower.

Although not as famous and valuable as the rarer 250 GTO nowadays, the 275 GTB is among the most recognizable and sought-after Ferraris. All told, it’s not surprising that Maranello went as far as to redesign the F12berlinetta in order to include the styling cues that made the 275 GTB a legendary grand tourer.

Is America Getting Another Variant Of The Alfa Romeo Giulia?

There once was a time when Alfa Romeo’s presence in the North American market consisted of nothing more than wayward dreams and nonexistent aspirations. Times sure have changed because the beleaguered Italian marque is making a headstrong push towards relevancy in the U.S., and at the heart of this push is the well-received Giulia sedan.

Right now, the Giulia comes in two forms here in this region. There’s the entry level, 280-horsepower, Ti version and then there’s the Giulia Quadrifoglio and its menacing 505-horsepower capabilities. But what if neither variant suits you? Is there a mid-tier variant that can bridge the gap between the two models? Well, if documents obtained by Auto Evolution come to fruition, we could very well see a new version of the Giulia hit the U.S., one that will carry a more potent output of 350 horsepower, enough to bridge the 225-horsepower gap between the Ti and the Quadrifoglio. Some might say it’s actually more like a canyon-sized gulf.

The table’s been set for the 350-horsepower Giulia to make a significant impression on the U.S. market, especially if the Ti and Quadrifoglio variants live up to the hype they’ve been generating. It’s also possible that the 350-horsepower will carry the “Veloce” name, which is already being used by Alfa Romeo in the European markets to denote a more luxurious trim level sans any performance upgrades. It’s admittedly confusing to get two market-specific Giulia Veloce variants with different power outputs, but it’s excusable if you’re a company that’s looking to make some serious headway in one of those regions.

Obviously, a U.S.-spec Giulia Veloce isn’t a sure thing until Alfa Romeo says it is. But this report is nevertheless exciting to hear, especially for fans of the Italian brand who have long waited for it to once again become a major player in the U.S. market.

Honda Odyssey

The Honda Odyssey was born in a time of need during Japan’s economic crisis in the 1990s. As such, the first-generation model was much smaller than the model that we know today. That model lasted just long enough for Honda to build a U.S.-based production facility and the Odyssey has been getting better ever since. Each generation of Honda’s resident minivan has been short lived, with the longest being the current and fourth-generation which will run through the 2017 model year. For 2018, Honda is introducing the fifth-generation model and, while there’s still a while to wait before it hits dealers, the Japanese brand has already released a rather intriguing rendering to go with the announcement that it will be officially unveiled at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. Little is known about the next-gen model thus far, but the rendering depicts a sleek and sexy minivan that could very well put the competition on their knees.

I know; that’s a pretty bold statement for a segment that has models like the Toyota Sienna and Chrysler Pacifica fighting to be the best, but you should keep in mind that Honda has made huge strides to turn itself around these past few years. The new Civic, for instance, is the most wild-looking model yet, and need we even mention the new Acura NSX? We can only see the rear and side view of the new Odyssey in the official rendering, and even then, lots of cues are still hidden away for the official debut, but just imagine a minivan with the styling of the Civic and NSX, a decent powertrain, and the ability to haul a large family with two weeks of groceries.

Either way, we’re going to see a completely redesigned Odyssey that will feature new powertrain technology and a “new suite of innovative features.” And, for what it’s worth, the new Odyssey will probably be kid approved, considering that children of those on the development team even put crayon to paper to make their own “scribbles” of what the new Odyssey should look like. Now that’s fun. With that said, let’s dive on in, talk about this official rendering and more about what we can expect in Detroit.

Tested: 3M Headlight Restoration Kit

Let’s face it – the sun is not good for your car. It fades the paint, it dries and cracks the dashboard, and it yellows and damages the plastic bits along the exterior, including the plastic headlight lenses. Well, 3M has a product that helps reverse sun damage on headlight lenses by gently sanding away the damaged layer of plastic to restore a fresh surface that’s free of discoloration and scratches. 3M wanted me to try my hand at restoring my 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer’s faded lights, so they sent me their heavy-duty restoration kit.

The all-inclusive headlight restoration kit came with everything I needed except for a household drill and microfiber rags. But since I’m at least halfway handy around the house and a self-respecting man, I already had both on hand. It also helps to have a spray bottle of water handy.

The kit comes with a step-by-step guide with full-color photos and tips. As for the actual hardware, it comes with three levels of sanding media, rubbing compound, a compound pad, a drill mount for the sand paper, and a finishing wax designed to protect the plastic from future discoloration. Oh, and before you tear your garage apart looking for masking tape like I did, the 3M kit includes that too.

So let’s dive into this weekend project to see what 3M’s headlight restoration kit is all about.

Alfa Romeo Eyeing Return To Formula 1

After a spectacular comeback to the market with vehicles such as the 4C sports car, Giulia Quadrifoglio sedan, and the Stelvio SUV, Alfa Romeo could return to high-profile racing after a very long hiatus. According to Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne, an Alfa Romeo Formula One project could be used to help up-and-coming Italian drivers join the sport. No Italian has started an F1 race since 2011 and Ferrari hasn’t fielded an Italian pilot since 2009 (but it has hired GP2 rookie Antonio Giovinazzi as its reserve driver for 2017).

"Alfa Romeo in F1 could become a fine breeding ground for young Italian drivers. The best one, Giovinazzi, is already with us, but there are others besides him, and they are struggling to find room. Alfa Romeo, more than our customer teams, could offer them that space," Marchionne told Italian media, according to Motorsport.com.

There’s no specific deadline as to when Alfa Romeo might join F1, but Marchionne said that the project would have to wait due to the several road cars launched that are underway.

"The problem is that, at the moment, because of the launch of road cars that will come out soon, there already numerous commitments from a financial point of view. With the launch of the Giulia and the Stelvio we have to wait for a bit, but I hope to be able to bring it back," he added.

I wouldn’t get my hopes up to see the Alfa Romeo badge in Formula One before 2019.

The Italian brand has been an important figure in motorsport since the early days, fielding several cars in pre-WWII Grand Prix events. After joining sports car racing and winning three back-to-back 24 Hours of Le Mans races in the 1930s, Alfa Romeo joined Formula One in its maiden season in 1950. The Italians dominated the series in 1950 and 1951, but withdrew after that and didn’t return as a construction to this day. However, Alfa Romeo supplied several F1 teams with engines, including McLaren, March, and Brabham. Alfa’s last appearance in F1 as an engine supplier was in 1988 alongside the small Italian team Osella. In 1987, Alfa Romeo made a deal to supply engines to Ligier, but all was cancelled when Fiat took control of the brand.

Guess What! Your Ford Mustang is a Girl Car

The Ford Mustang – it’s known as a man’s car, a muscle car, and one to keep your distance from at any gathering of cars. But, maybe it’s not so much of a man’s car anymore, as a group of 17 women from 14 countries have just labeled it as the Women’s Performance Car of the Year for 2016. That’s right, while the Mustang is masculine and has that muscle car goodness every man loves, women really love it too. And, it’s not the only Ford that women love. The Focus RS is also widely loved by the fairer sex as it came in a very close second, nearly earning its own Women’s Performance Car of the Year title.

“Ford Mustang is surprisingly loved by women who are after a sexy, sporty, masculine car that turns heads,” said Juliet Potter, Women’s World Car of the Year jury member from Australia. “Combining the car’s silver-screen celebrity status with real-life practicality, Mustang screams, ‘I am in control!’ and delivers the same behind the wheel with above-average grip and suspension.”

The Women’s Performance car of the Year is the only vehicle honor in the world that is granted by a panel of all women. And, one could argue that they do have really good taste, as the Mustang was given the highest award after being compared to a total of 294 competitors. The women have roared. And sorry to tell you, fellas, she doesn’t want you; she wants your Mustang. The worst part is, you don’t see women crashing mustangs at car meets, so maybe they actually know how to drive them better, too. All jokes aside, this is just one of many awards the Mustang has won over its long life, and we’re sure there are more to come. Excellent choice ladies! Now, can you please teach the men in the world how to drive them?

BMW Steps Into New Frontier With HoloActive Touch System

If by some way we end up with car featuring Tony Stark-levels of technology, we could point back to the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show as the tipping point that allowed us to push beyond imagination and into actual reality. It’s still a big leap from that day, but BMW has arrived at the stage wherein the possibilities are now upon us. The German automaker is scheduled to introduce the HoloActive Touch system, a concept interior that removes all sorts of traditional interior features and replaces them with a floating protection that interacts with a touchscreen pad. If you can’t picture it, think Tony Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The basic gist of the HoloActive Touch system is actually pretty straight-forward. It bears some similarities to the current head-up display tech that makes use of reflections to project an image and make it appear as if it’s floating in mid-air. The projection is synced into a physical touchscreen found on the center console of the car, which itself can be configured by the driver to perform a myriad of different functions, as if your fingers are controlling the images that you see in the projection. If this sounds familiar, it’s because the HoloActive Touch tech also has some of BMW’s own Gesture Control features attached to it, which when combined together, creates a pretty immersive visual interaction with the car itself.

The whole tech is admittedly next-level science fiction variety. We’ve seen different variations of it from Hollywood, but nowhere have we seen it adapted into the real world in the magnitude of what BMW claims it has right now. It’s pretty exciting to see what the future possibilities of the HoloActive Touch system are. Just don’t expect to see it in production form in the near future. Between head-up displays and gesture controls, it does feel like car interior technology is moving at a rapid pace, or at least faster than the time it takes for us to keep up with them.

Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V hit the global market back in 1995 and has sold fairly well since its introduction. The CR-V entered the most recent generation back in 2012, but it went through a pretty significant update for 2015 that included an improved safety structure to help bring the little crossover up to par in IIHS crash testing. At the time, the CR-V also received a new, direct-injected engine, new CVT transmission, and some additional chassis work to help improve its overall ride. For the 2017 model year, Honda is ushering in the fifth-gen model that brings even more significant change, including additional interior space and a new, turbocharged engine for the upper trim levels – marking the first time the CR-V has been offered with forced induction of any kind from the factory.

Despite the fact that Honda is boasting an all-new body and chassis design, you’re not going to see a whole lot of significant change on the outside. The car has been reworked to some extent, but it’s more in line with what you might see on a facelift as opposed to a generational redesign. There are some fresh goodies to talk about inside, and there is that new, turbocharged engine that promises the best fuel economy in the compact SUV class. So, without spilling the beans too much here, let’s dive on in and take a good look at the 2017 Honda CR-V.

Updated 12/21/2016: Honda announced prices for the 2017 CR-V which is now on sale at dealers nationwide. Check the "Prices" section for the full details.

Kia GT Teased Once Again Ahead of Detroit Debut

Spotted testing on public roads since early 2016, the production version of the Kia GT is about to break cover at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show. With just a couple of weeks left until the year’s first major automotive event kicks off, Kia is busy teasing the upcoming vehicle and it has just released a new video. The third clip as of December 21, the new teaser showcases some of the car’s exterior features.

The footage is rather shadowy and hides most of the actual details found in the sheet metal, but it provides plenty of hints as to what the car looks like. What’s evident from the very start is that the sports sedan is heavily based on the concept car. It has a sexy, coupe-like profile, steeply raked rear glass, and a big trunk lid spoiler. Up front, I spotted a pair of sleek, sweptback headlamps, the already traditional "tigernose" grille, and dual vents for the bulged engine hood. Other highlights include large alloy wheels, quad exhaust pipes, a lowered suspension, and LED technology in the front and rear.

Not much else can be seen, but we do know that the GT model will be rear-wheel-drive with the option to select an AWD setup. Kia also revealed that the sedan will be able to hit 62 mph from a standing start in 5.1 seconds on its way to a top speed of 151 mph, figures that are likely to be achieved with a twin-turbo, 3.3-liter V-6 engine rated at more than 300 horsepower. The automaker could also offer less powerful versions motivated by four-cylinder drivetrains, but we will find out more about that when the GT breaks cover at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Acura MDX – Driven

The Acura MDX has been roaming streets since the turn of the new millennium. It has held fairly strong sales numbers, with 2014 being its best year with 65,603 examples finding homes. That makes since, as the 2014 model year marked the first year of the current generation. But sales have slowly slipped, with Acura only moving 49,252 MDX models in the first 11 months of 2016. However, the three-row crossover has a new hope – a heavily refreshed face for the 2017 model year.

The new MDX looses the unloved “shield” or “beak,” as some called it, trading it in favor of a pentagonal grille with a massive Acura logo affixed front and center. It takes after the Acura Precision Concept. A revised rear fascia and chrome rocker panels further add a level of luxury not present before.

Matching the updated looks are a slew of updated safety systems. AcuraWatch is now standard on every MDX, and includes Forward Collision Warning, Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Keep Assist, and Adaptive Cruise Control. Thanks to these new systems, along with the LED headlights that scored an “Acceptable” rating with the IIHS, the MDX made the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ list for 2017.

The underpinnings continue almost unchanged, however, including the 3.5-liter V-6, nine-speed automatic transmission, and Acura’s available Super Handling AWD system. That’s not a big deal, as the V-6 continues to offer excellent power and efficiency. The i-VTEC and direct-injection 3.5-liter makes 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque while achieving 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined on models equipped with SH-AWD.

To get a feel of the refreshed 2017 MDX, Acura sent me an example to test for a week. I used it as a daily driver – chauffeuring the kid to school, picking up groceries, and making runs across town. Here are my thoughts and impressions.

Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

The third-generation C-Class came to be for the 2015 model year with an all-new modular platform that helped drop as much as 220 pounds over the previous generation. The current model is only a couple of years old at the time of this writing, but we’ve already seen facelifted versions of the sedan and wagon testing on public roads. Now, just a few weeks after seeing the four-door models, we’re getting to lay our eyes on the facelifted two-door coupe. On the docket of changes, you’ll find things like a revised radiator grille, new headlights and taillights, revised front and rear fascias, and some minor updates to the interior. Those update should include some new interior color options as well as a revised infotainment system and a revised instrument cluster. To put it simply, the facelifted, 2018 C-Class will bring enough refinement to make everything right for the third-gen model. It will also keep the compact car fresh until after the turn of the decade when Mercedes should be planning the next-generation model for 2021 or 2022.

While we are looking at a facelifted prototype here, don’t expect to see everything in one go. If you happen to remember what Mercedes did with the S-Class, you’ll know that Merc is using a one-part-at-a-time strategy as opposed to testing with all facelifted components at one time. This allows the brand to help keep some of the mystery while making sure that everything is kosher. As we move closer to the launch date, we should see all three models – sedan, wagon, and coupe – testing with all facelifted modifications, but until then, we’ll only see bits and pieces.

We should lay eyes on the next round of testers in the next few months, but for now, let’s dive on in and check out what’s going on with the C-Class Coupe.

Top Gear Might Have To Find A New Test Track

The Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey, England hold a soft spot in the hearts of Top Gear fans since the airfield has been the site of the test track that the show has been using since 2002. But all that could change after the BBC reported that a local council has approved plans to redevelop the Aerodrome and turn into a housing complex with 1,800 new homes expected to be built.

The votes were casted by the Waverly Borough Council and the majority won out in a 1,008-vote to redevelop the airfield with hopes of creating more jobs and adding more affordable homes in the area. The same BBC report indicates that the area around the Aerodrome is already home to over 100 businesses.

The runways, in particular, are also likely to be closed down and be redeveloped as a business park. That’s not good news for Top Gear as it could face the all-too real possibility of having to find a new test track for its show. Plans are still unclear on how the parties involved are going to move forward with their plans, but from the looks of things, we might have to say adieu to “Hammerhead” and “Gambon,” two of the more famous turns in the track.

Hopefully, producers of the long-running motoring show can find a way to preserve the track while the development of the residential project begins. But given the nature of what the local council in Surrey wants to built, it’s highly likely that Top Gear will have to find another test track for The Stig.

At the very least, you can add this new development to the array of changes that have befallen the once mighty auto show since the departures of stalwarts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond.
