BMW’s M3 sedan, M4 coupe, and M4 convertible have always been highly regarded and more than good enough to satisfy the craving for luxury and performance buyers in one package. Those models, however, are about to be offered with a new optional package dubbed the “Competition Package.” But, before we dive too much into what this new package offers for the M3 sedan, M4 coupe, and M4 convertible, let’s take a quick look back at the models.
It doesn’t take much to explain the M3. It was introduced back in 1985 and has seen several generations, including induction into the E36, E46, E90, E92, and E93 generations of the 3 Series. It is also the only car that has earned more titles in Motorsport than the Porsche 911. The M3 coupe and convertible are long gone, but the sedan carries the name on, and we’re excited to see BMW is still offering up new packages for the 21-year-old name.
When the M4 came to be in 2014, BMW ceased production of the M3 coupe and convertible in favor of having the M4 coupe and convertible instead. This gave the M3 sedan a series all its own, with the M4 carrying on the M legacy, but like the refreshed M3 sedan, it is powered by an inline six-cylinder engine that pumps out 431 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque. The change over to a turbocharged six wasn’t all that unwelcome, though, as the engine puts out an additional 17 horsepower and 111 pound-feet of torque more than the outgoing V-8 in the M3. BMW also claims better efficiency with a 25-percent improvement in fuel economy.
So, what does this new Competition Package offer for this trio? Well, I’m glad you asked. Take a short walk down the page with me as we look into these packages and how they make the M3 and M4 that much better.
