Volkswagen’s popular Tiguan compact SUV is moving into its second generation for 2016, and is growing in both size and maturity. Debuting at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, the all-new Tiguan has caught everyone’s attention thanks to a host of onboard gadgets, segment first safety technologies, and a slew of new powertrains.
VW is aiming to cash in on the growing compact crossover market. The automaker says it expects the segment to grow nearly nine percent, expanding from 8.17 million units currently sold annually to more than 8.93 million units by 2018. Having moved more than 2.64 million first-generation Tiguans since its introduction in 2007, there’s no doubt VW recognizes the crossover’s value.
Besides cashing in on the segment growth, VW is pushing the segment forward with both safety and user interface technologies. A digital gauge cluster is present and the upgraded infotainment system software is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Safety wise, the new Tiguan comes standard with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, along with an industry first active pedestrian protection system that pushes the hood upward, preventing the pedestrian’s head from contacting the engine, during a collision.
The new Tiguan rides on Volkswagen’s new MQB platform, which is shared with vehicles ranging from the 2015 Volkswagen Golf to the new 2016 Audi TT. The built-in flexibility of the MQB platform allows engineers to tailor the Tiguan to different markets. U.S. and Chinese-spec Tiguans will feature a longer wheelbase, helping the compact crossover appeal to those markets. VW says the long wheelbase Tiguan will debut in the fall of 2016, a year after the standard Tiguan goes on sale in Europe and other parts of the world.
