Mazda Koeru

In recent years, Mazda has redesigned nearly its entire lineup of vehicles, giving them a fresh look through the KODO design language, and a range of fuel-efficient SkyActiv engines. However, the CX-9 SUV has soldiered on virtually unchanged since 2006, remaining the only survivor of Mazda’s partnership with Ford. At the same time, the 2010 Mazda CX-7 was discontinued in 2012 due to poor sales. While the CX-9 is most certainly in for a refresh soon, the CX-7 could return in the lineup.

Dubbed Koeru, which is Japanese for "exceed" or "go beyond," the concept is described as the brand’s "latest venture into the growing crossover SUV market, where the company is again looking to surpass existing standards and raise the bar for performance, efficiency and overall value."

Though there’s no official word as to what production model this crossover previews, it looks a lot like a midsize SUV. Or the exact same type of vehicle Mazda didn’t offer since the CX-7 was phased out three years ago.

Updated 09/15/2015: The new Mazda Koeru made its world debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.
