BMW Unveils 2016 M2

Coming up with a successor to the fantastic 1-Series M coupe is no easy task, but Bimmer looks like it has the right stuff with the track-oriented M2, combining low weight, big power, and a cornucopia of go-faster tech tricks.

Behind the kidney grille is an all-aluminum twin-turbo inline-six that pulls select components from the M3 and M4. Output is 365 horsepower and 343 pound-feet of torque. An overboost function adds another 26 pound-feet on command. There’s a modified oil sump to combat the effects of high-performance driving, and a flap in the exhaust for either quiet cruising or loud aggression. There’s also a standard start-stop function, brake energy reclamation system, and smart ancillary component management to boost fuel mileage.

Power is routed to the rear wheels via a standard six-speed manual gearbox equipped with rev-matching technology. There’s also an optional dual-clutch transmission for those who prefer paddles. With the DCT and launch control activated, 0-to-60 mph is achieved in 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds with the manual). Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph.

The M2 boasts a wider track plus lightweight M Sport suspension components hewn from aluminum. Making the smoke are 19-inch wheels wrapped with Michelin Pilot Sport tires, while short stops come from M compound brakes with 15-inch rotors up front and 14.5-inch rotors in the rear. The calipers are painted blue, with four-piston units up front and two-piston units in back.

Buyers will have four exterior colors to choose from: Alpine White, Black Sapphire metallic, Long Beach Blue metallic, and Mineral Grey metallic.

The M2 will hit authorized BMW centers next spring. Pricing is currently unavailable.
