Remember the 2014 Camaro Z/28 vs 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition head-to-head the folks over at Motor Trend orchestrated in early 2014? In case you missed it, Head 2 Head show host Jonny Lieberman and race car driver Randy Pobst tested the cars in both open road and track conditions, ultimately declaring the Z/28 the winner. Wait, what?! Yep, you read that correct. Both Lieberman and Probst liked the Camaro better, on top of the American muscle car being slightly quicker around the Barber Motorsports Park track. Almost a year later, Motor Trend’s Head 2 Head is back with another U.S. vs Japanese duel, this time around between the 2015 Corvette Z06 and the 2015 GT-R Nismo.

The background is very similar, as both supercars are tested on the road before being hooned on the track. For this comparison, however, Randy Pobst uses the high-speed Willow Springs track to decide which is closer to a full-fledged race car. The result? Well, while Motor Trend found the cars to be equally fun to drive on the open road, the GT-R Nismo turned out to be 1.5 seconds quicker on the track, despite being heavier and less powerful than the Z06. The GT-R’s secret is that it can achieve higher speeds on the straight, an area in which the Z06 falls behind because of its drag-producing wickerbill rear spoiler. Who would’ve thought the race-bred Vette would be slower than a GT-R that’s not exactly new?
