Although the C-Class has always been Mercedes’ direct rival to the BMW 3 Series and the Audi A4, the model was never offered in as many versions as its competitors, with the Stuttgart carmaker choosing to make just a sedan, a station wagon and since 2011 a coupe as well. This situation will change with the latest generation of the C-Class, the lineup being extended to also include a convertible version for the first time ever.
Developed entirely from the ground up as a convertible and not by chopping the roof of a coupe, the 2016 C-Class Cabrio is set to be unveiled just a couple of months after the 2016 C-Class Coupe will be launched at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show in September. Even though it will be unveiled after its fixed-roof brother, Mercedes-Benz actually started testing pre-production prototypes of the convertible in early 2013, long before the Coupe version began making rounds in front of spy photographer lenses. Based on the Mercedes-Benz MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, which is largely built from aluminum and high-strength steel, the new C-Class Cabrio is expected to be the lightest car in its segment.
Updated 02/04/2015: Based on the latest spy shots, we’ve created a very cool rendering for the upcoming C-Class Convertible. Check it out after the jump.
