Ah, a new year, with fresh sheets of paper for the bean counters in all of the major automakers’ offices to look at in hopes of filling them with black numbers. You’ve got it, folks, we have our first batch of sales numbers for the 2015 calendar year, and we have some pretty big winners to go along with a few losers.
Mitsubishi was the biggest winner in terms of sales increase relative to January 2014, at 42.7 percent. I can’t quite put my finger on why Mitsubishi saw such an increase, except for the fact that it did so dismally in January 2014. Expect Mitsubishi to continue to climb, as its best-selling vehicle, the Outlander Sport, just received a more powerful 2.4-liter engine 2015 model year. One of the biggest gripes about Mitsu’s small people-hauler was its underpowered 2.0-liter engine, so this should certainly help.
Other smaller brands that made big jumps include Porsche, at 27.2 percent, most of which can be attributed to the 796 Macans sold in January compared to none in January 2014 (it wasn’t released yet). Mini was right behind Porsche with a 26.9 percent jump, while Lexus topped both Europeans brands at 31.2 percent.
It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows in January though, as Maserati saw a 20.4 percent drop and Bentley saw a 50 percent decline. Both brands sell in such limited numbers, however, that these drops can be from the closure of a dealership or any other minor change.
