General Motors has announced an issue with its new Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon midsize pickup trucks. A problem has arisen with the wiring harness that connects the driver-side airbag. This could potentially lead to the two-stage airbag deploying at the wrong force in an accident.
The problem originates to some crossed wires, literally. GM says the crossed connections within the wiring harness will lead to the “two-stage airbag system reversing the deployment sequence and disruption the deployment timing of the driver airbag stages.”
Thankfully, GM says most of the trucks are still in transit or on dealer lots. Only a few have made the transition into customers’ hands. The trucks will all undergo repairs to correct the bad connections. Like all recall situations, repairs will be done at no cost to the customers.
While this certainly isn’t GM’s first recall situation, it comes as the first hit to the Colorado and Canyon trucks. Moreover, this recall affects a critical safety system that is imperative to saving lives. While it halts the sale of GM’s latest truck and adds to the company’s tarnished public image, at least the GM can report there have been no known crashes, injuries, or deaths from the incident.
