Introduced for the 2013 model year, the Acura ILX arrived in America to give the luxury automaker a compact sedan. A brand-new sedan for the U.S. market, the ILX was Acura’s first true compact car since the RSX, plus it was the first of its brand to gain a hybrid drivetrain. For 2015, the luxury manufacturer dropped the hybrid drivetrain from the ILX, leaving the compact with two Honda Civic-sourced, gasoline four-bangers at its disposal: a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter and a 201-pony 2.4-liter. The sedan remained largely unchanged for 2015, but a comprehensive facelift is set to arrive in 2016 and turn the ILX into a sportier and more luxurious proposition for the North American market.
Launched at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show, the revised ILX lives up to our expectations as far as exterior and interior improvements go, while presenting itself somewhat disappointing in the drivetrain department, where the brand-new eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic doesn’t really make up for the lack of a more powerful engine. Although Acura dropped the shabby 2.0-liter, it kept the 2.4-liter unit without significant improvements despite promising a "potent" engine. Unless "potent" means last year’s engine with a bit more torque, Acura has another thing coming.
Updated 04/12/2016: Acura announced prices for the 2017 ILX - a model that continues unchanged over the 2016 model year and will be put on sale tomorrow, April 13, 2016.
