Subaru Impreza

Only a few days have passed since Subaru launched a couple of renderings of the Impreza 5-Door Concept, a study that "takes its inspiration from the design of the next-generation Impreza." Though the concept will showcased at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show in late October, when it will give us a glimpse of the next-gen compact, the production car is already being tested on public roads.

That’s the word from our paparazzi, who stumbled across a hatchback version of the fifth-gen Impreza roaming the streets of California with a thick layer of camouflage on every inch of its body.

While much of its design is shrouded in mystery, we do know a thing or two about the new Impreza. For instance, the compact will ride on the flexible Subaru Global Platform, soon to underpin almost all of the brand’s models, and that power will still be provided by flat-four powerplants. Production is reportedly set to commence in the third quarter of 2016 at the Lafayette, Indiana plant, where both the 4-door and 5-door variants will be built.

More details should surface as we move closer to the vehicle’s official debut in 2016, but, in the meantime, let’s have a closer looks at the spy shots below.

Updated 03/10/2016: Subaru officially confirmed it will unveil the 2017 Impreza at the 2016 New York Auto Show on March 23, 2016.
