The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro broke cover earlier in 2015 as a more compact pony underpinned by a new, lighter platform and dressed in a familiar, yet refreshed suit. The redesign also brought three new engines, including a fuel-efficient four-banger and the Corvette’s LT1 V-8. Seeing how the new Camaro is a significant improvement over its predecessor, I couldn’t help wonder what the future will bring. I’m obviously talking about supercharged ZL1 and the track-focused Z/28, two very important versions of the Camaro in Chevrolet’s battle against the Ford Mustang, the Dodge Challenger, and even sports coupes from BMW and Audi.
For now, I will focus on the Camaro ZL1, of which we already have a rendering, based on the Camaro SS.
The 2016 Camaro is way too fresh for GM to talk about the next-generation ZL1, but the supercharged coupe is likely to arrive over the next couple of years. Although its exterior design isn’t much of a mystery, the drivetrain will most likely differ from the previous car. Keeping an older engine for the ZL1 when the Camaro received three new units would be redundant and not even GM is that stupid. But what will motivate the next ZL1? Keep reading to find out more.
