Compact crossovers continue to gain popularity in the U.S. and Europe, and seemingly every automaker is getting in on the fun. Now, the latest craze is taking these small utility vehicles and turning them into performance rigs. It all began with the funky 2016 Juke-R Nismo, then moved on to the 2015 Mercedes GLA 45 AMG. Now, rumor has it that Fiat will almost certainly join this fad with an Abarth-touched version of the 2016 Fiat 500X.
This report comes straight from the mouth of Alfredo Altavilla, Fiat Chrysler Group chief operating officer, who told Auto Express “Besides the 2018 Fiat 124 Spider Abarth and 2016 Fiat 500, we are thinking about an all-new addition to the [Abarth] lineup,” He continued by adding “The 500X is one of the options being considered.”
While the 500X and its Jeep sibling, the 2015 Jeep Renegade, have both managed to grow on me to the point that I no longer want to heave a grenade into the driver-side window of any one that I see, I still am on the fence about a performance version of the small Fiat crossover.
