Nissan Juke-R Nismo

Nissan’s unveiled a teaser shot of the Juke-R NISMO, which is scheduled to make its debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. The sequel to the 2011 Nissan Juke-R, it promises to be the wildest performance crossover yet, assuming it follows the same template.

The Juke-R is one of those cars that’s going to go down in automotive history partly because it’s completely nuts, and partly because it shouldn’t even exist in the first place. Some unknown discussion between Nissan Europe’s engineering staff and the motorsports people at the RML Group led to the idea that the twin-turbo V-6 from the GT-R could be stuffed into Nissan’s smallest crossover, complete with all-wheel drive. Engineers being engineers, the deed was soon done (no telling if alcohol was involved) and the insane Juke-R was born.

It was too ridiculous to live, of course. Nissan seemed to think this as well, and when pressured to make more it built 21 of them and put an equally ridiculous $600,000 price tag on the thing — and apparently sold every one. If that’s not the makings of an automotive legend, I don’t know what is.

And now, Nissan seems to be officially sanctioning a new monster Juke, just to keep the legend going. The existence of an official teaser photo suggests that the production run may be larger this time around, too. I’ve got no complaints about that. Goodwood is an excellent place to debut the thing, as well, being one of the crazier events on the vintage-car circuit.
