Lincoln Continental

The rather depressing state in which the Lincoln brand has been sitting in the last decade or so may get a slight turn for the better thanks in part to the upcoming replacement for its flagship sedan, the MKS. Set to be unveiled at the end of 2015 as a 2016 model year, the second generation of the MKS has been known internally at Lincoln as the new Continental, but considering the current nomenclature nobody expected the production version to stick to the same name.

Nobody, except the Godfather of Grunge, Canadian musician Neil Young, that is. In a recent interview about his latest music and business ventures on CNBC’s Mad Money, Young revealed that he is working with Lincoln’s marketing in order to have his Pono digital music player and download service included in the upcoming Continental for a 2016 release. It is not exactly clear if he called the MKS replacement the "Continental" because that’s what it’s actually going to be called or simply because Lincoln engineers call the project that way internally. We suspect it is the former, mainly thanks to the fact that the MK followed by a random letter nomenclature is probably confusing a lot of potential customers.

Either way, a new Lincoln flagship sedan is coming, and it will apparently be built on an enlarged variant of the Ford CD4 platform, which currently sits under the Lincoln MKZ, 2014 Ford Fusion/Mondeo and the Ford Edge crossover. While many Lincoln fans would probably prefer a rear-wheel drive architecture, that is sadly not going to happen.

Updated 03/09/2015: While the revival of the Continental is still just a rumor, we decided to create a rendering to show you what the new model could look like.
