BMW's Self-Drifting Car Vs Drift Champion: Video

Of all German carmakers, BMW is likely the most used in "drifting," albeit Mercedes-AMG has started getting in the game as well in recent years, especially when talking about the tail-happy C63. But BMW had been coy about openly admitting that its cars are built for those who drift. That changed after the 2013 CES (Consumer Electronics Show), when BMW showcased an M235i that can drift by itself, with no driver input.

Since then, BMW also created a commercial where five M235i models drift and create havoc in a South African traffic circle, and a team of Forza Horizon 2 gamers recreated the stunt virtually in February 2015. BMW is now back with the self-drifting M235i Connected Drive prototype, only this time it pitted the car against a normal model, driven by a drift champion.

Both cars where filmed going sideways in a circle, but it should be noted that conditions weren’t identical, and it seems that the two cars weren’t even on the same skidpad. The M235i Connected Drive was helped by water sprayed on the driving surface, while the human-driven M235i scorched its tires on a dry skidpad. The point of all this isn’t clear, apart from being just a marketing gimmick, but BMW does go to extreme lengths to showcase its self-drifting technology and the resulting video is mildly entertaining.
