When General Motors dusts off a name like Stingray after keeping it on a shelf for 38 years, you know you’ve got something special on your hands. Also called the C7, the newest Corvette is a definite bargain, bringing rocket-ship performance without the requisite space-program budget. We even named the 2015 Z06 model our Performance Car of the Year in 2014.
But what if you want something different? What if you want something unique? What if you want a ‘Vette that’s faster than your neighbor’s C7, but with a certain “je ne sais quois” flair?
Well then, Hennessey is here to help. The U.S.-based tuning house is famous for building outrageous street cars with off-the-charts power figures, such as the Venom GT, which Hennessey claims to be the fastest street-legal car in the world, with 1,244 horsepower, a chassis that weighs 2,742 pounds, and an alleged top speed of 270 mph.
No stranger to Chevy’s flagship, one of Hennessey’s latest packages takes a stock C7 and pumps in roughly a Ford Focus ST’s worth of extra ponies, bringing the grand total 708 horses at 6,300 rpm. It’s called the HPE700 Supercharged Upgrade, and it includes a 2.3-liter blower, high-flow cylinder heads, a new camshaft, new gaskets and fluids, ECU calibration, and a swath of badges, plaques, and interior odds and ends. The price? $18,450, which includes professional installation, custom tuning, and a three-year/36,000-mile limited warranty. Sounds like a bargain to me.
The end result, as you can clearly glean from this video, is one ridiculously fast Corvette. With a set of drag radials properly equipped, 0-to-60 blinks by in 2.9 seconds, while the quarter mile is decimated in 10.97 seconds at 131.3 mph.
So then, which would you have: a Hennessey Stingray or factory Z06?
Or perhaps picking between two bowties is the wrong idea altogether. Perhaps your tastes lean towards something with the name “Hellcat” attached. Oh, the choices. And the new American Performance Revolution rolls onward.
