Mercedes GLB

Mercedes is working on a baby G-Class; a smaller utility vehicle

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has carried on largely unchanged since its launch in 1979. A few cosmetic changes, more luxurious interior features, and updated engines cover the majority of the upgrades the Germans have introduced to the boxy SUV over the past 30 years. That’s all going to change in 2017 when Mercedes is expected to launch a comprehensive facelift for the vehicle, but the end of the decade will also bring a baby G-Wagen. According to CAR, Daimler is working on the GLB, a smaller G-Class that will "bring the chunky SUV look to the masses." The crossover is reportedly slated to enter production in September 2019 and go on sale as a 2020 model.

Although CAR doesn’t quote any sources — not even company insiders as is the case with such reports — the piece does make some sense. Mercedes has been pondering a crossover to slot between the GLA and the GLK for a few years now, but initial rumors claimed it will be called the X-Class. Now that the Germans are readying a new naming strategy, the X-Class moniker has been dropped in favor of the GLB, which hints the vehicle is the company’s crossover equivalent of the B-Class compact.
