Mercedes AMG Petronas Secures First-Ever Formula One Constructors' Championship

The 2014 Formula One season has been dominated by one name: Mercedes. The Mercedes AMG Petronas team just secured the first World Championship in its history with a 1-2 finish over the weekend at the Russian Grand Prix, on the brand new Sochi Circuit.

Mercedes’ domination has been so great, that there are still three more races this year, including a double-points final, and there is still no way the second-place Red Bull team can win. What’s more, Mercedes has more points than the third, fourth and fifth place teams combined. Those teams are the legendary Ferrari, McLaren and Williams.

More than simply winning the championship, cars using Mercedes engines have claimed almost three-quarters of all podium appearances. Mercedes has a long and illustrious racing career across almost all forms of motorsport, but now it seems that it can add F1 domination to its resume.

Things are not all sunshine and roses for the rest of the season, however. With those three races, and the double-points finale, Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo still has a chance to snag the Drivers’ Championship trophy from the grasp of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

The next race takes place here in the United States at the Circuit of the America’s in Austin, Texas.
