Porsche Macan to Get Several New Versions, But No Two-Door

In today’s episode of “Car Company’s Gaining Sanity” it appears that Porsche will not be making a two-door version of its new Macan SUV. A new report from the Australian site Motoring claims that Porsche is in fact working on several new versions of the Macan from a Turbo S and GTS model all the way to a plug-in hybrid version like the Panamera S E-Hyrbid I just drove. This information comes from a spokesman for the brand named Paul Ellis.

According to Ellis, the Macan family will eventually grow to have the same number of members as the larger Cayenne. Despite these plans to grow, Ellis reiterated that there are no plans to drop 4WD and no plans for a two-door like the Range Rover Evoque. "All our SUVs are four-wheel drive," he said. "For me two-wheel drive is not an option.” He also stated “For us the Macan is [already] a coupe. It’s closer to the [BMW] X4 than X3. Evoque two-door is only 20 per cent [of sales].”

When it comes to those news models, Ellis was not willing to divulge details about the potential Turbo or GTS versions of the small SUV, but he did say that the PHEV version would use the exact same drivetrain that the other E-Hybrid models currently use. That means 416 horsepower, an EV range of around 15 miles and fuel economy that should crest the 30-mpg mark. Sounds pretty awesome.

That is all good news in my book. I am frankly quite tired of all these ridiculous SUVs that are not really SUVs. Porsche, I personally want to thank you for keeping your head on straight and staying away from obnoxious sales fads that water down your brand and performance image.
