Nissan Leaf Vs. Ford Focus Electric: Compare Cars

2015 Nissan LeafIf you're considering a battery-electric car, the Nissan Leaf and the Ford Focus Electric represent two very different answers to the same question: What should a compact electric hatchback look like? The Leaf is by far the best-selling electric car sold both in North America and worldwide. But its design is distinctive and polarizing, enough so...

Pre-Owned Tesla Model S Start From $55,000

Anyone interested in getting their hands on Tesla’s universally acclaimed all-electric sports car will be happy to know that certified pre-owned Model S vehicles will be available for as low as $55,000. The used cars are available through Tesla’s website here, and serve American markets in Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, Denver, Florida, Hawaii, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco/Bay Area, Seattle, and Washington DC.

The American automaker launched its CPO program on its website earlier this month, forgoing the usual round of high-profile Tesla fanfare. You can browse the selection of used Model S vehicles, refining for market area, color, and model. Available models include the 60 kWh, 85 kWh, and high-end P85.

At launch, the least-expensive model available was somewhere in the $65,000 range. Now, cheaper models are making their way online. The number of available CPO Model S’s is expected to increase substantially over the course of the second half of 2015, as the first round of cars see an end to their three-year leases. According to Autoguide, it appears as though future pre-owned vehicles will be added with a price floor set at $55,000.

Each CPO Model S undergoes a 200+ point inspection and is offered with a remaining battery and drive warranty, plus a four-year, 50,000-mile limited warranty. Each car comes with a CarFax history report in the U.S. and 24-hour roadside assistance throughout the warranty period. Each CPO vehicle requires a $1,000 deposit. All of the cars are available for pickup, but Telsa will ship it to your nearest service center for a fee of up to $1,500. Each car comes directly from the company, circumventing the need for a dealer.

Smart Cabrio Crashes During Test Drive: Spy Shots

Contrary to this latest batch of spy shots, Daimler’s Smart division is not working on an off-road version of the 2016 Smart Fortwo or a tow-capable version of the new Smart Forfour. Instead, the spy photographers came upon an unfortunate engineer who seems to have driven off the road and gotten stuck in the thick vegetation.

The circumstances behind the incident are unknown, but it wasn’t severe enough to cause the airbags to deploy. Fortunately, it would appear that the driver escaped uninjured (with the possible exception of a bruised ego) and it doesn’t look like the prototype suffered any major damage. The mishap did require a Smart Forfour to be dispatched as the cutest little recovery vehicle ever, although it isn’t clear if the 90-horsepower four-door city car had the guts to pull its smaller counterpart from the brush.

We just recently had our first look at the 2016 Smart Fortwo Cabriolet testing in Spain, and like this vehicle, it seems to be in production-ready form wearing almost no camouflage. This most likely means that the convertible Fortwo could debut soon, with the Frankfurt Motor Show being the best guess. With the 2016 Smart Fortwo Coupe going on sale in the U.S. this fall, the release of the Cabriolet probably won’t be too far behind.

Next Volkswagen Golf GTI Could Deliver 300 HP

The Volkswagen Golf lineup is set for realignment at the top end of the performance spectrum, with new eighth-generation fast Golfs on the way, including a 300-horsepower Golf GTI, 350-horsepower Golf R and a new Golf RS variant with 400 horsepower. The next GTI will retain front-wheel-drive, while all-wheel-drive will be saved for the R and RS. We’ll likely get a preview of this new hierarchy when a production version of the 400-horsepower Golf R400, based on the current Golf, debuts later this year.

According to Automobile Magazine, the eighth-generation Golf is expected to arrive in 2019 and will be an evolution of the current car. It will be built on Volkswagen’s new MQB architecture (internally called MQB evo), with improvements focused primarily on drivetrain and electronics. The next Golf should be lighter too, with the new GTI weighing between 50 and 100 pounds less than current one.

The GTI’s new engine will be more or less the same EA888 2.0-liter four-cylinder from the current Golf R and mated to either a six-speed manual or optional dual-clutch automatic transmission. Other options will include bigger brakes, adaptive dampers and an electronic limited-slip differential (which it definitely needed to manage all that power going to the front wheels).

Mercedes-AMG GT S Is The New Safety Car For DTM

AMG-prepped Mercedes-Benz cars have a long and storied history as pace cars. From the SLS AMG to the C63 AMG, among others, Affalterbach’s beefed-up cars have acted as pace-setters in extremely popular series the world over, such as Formula One and DTM. The SLS AMG alone paced Formula One for five consecutive seasons between 2010 and 2014. Quite an achievement!

With the flagship SLS AMG already discontinued, it’s the Mercedes-AMG GT’s turn to keep things under control when yellow flags are out. Having already been confirmed as the official Safety Car for the 2015 F1 season, the AMG GT will also step in to replace DTM’s previous pace car, the C63 AMG Black Series, at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz on May 29th to 31st, during the second round of this year’s series.

The DTM Safety Car is virtually identical to the Formula One pace car, meaning the 490-horsepower Mercs, Bimmers, and Audis competing in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters will be led during yellow flags by a range-topping, 503-horsepower GT S model.

As usual, the safety car has a light bar on the roof, in this case mounted on an aerodynamically optimized carbon-fiber air scoop. Added features include a front spoiler and a fixed rear wing, both of which are borrowed from the Edition 1 model. A special license plate with "Safety Car" lettering and orange/green LEDs, and radio equipment inside the cockpit complete the package.

FCA Cutting Powertrain Warranties, Includes Ram and Jeep

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles looks to be cutting the mileage coverage of its powertrain warranty for nearly every vehicle in its fleet, including all gasoline-powered Ram and Jeep vehicles. Since 2009, the automaker has offered a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, but starting on 2016 models, FCA will only offer a five-year/60,000-mile coverage.

Mini Cooper S

It’s been only 13 years since BMW revived the Mini brand in 2001, and the Cooper has already been treated to a second overhaul for the 2014 model year. The redesign brought many changes inside and out, including fresh drivetrains. The Cooper S was upgraded to a larger four-cylinder engine that not only delivers more power and torque, but better fuel economy too.

The most striking fact about it, though, is that it’s longer and wider than it has ever been. Not only that, but Mini also launched its first-ever five-door Cooper, a body style that seemed unlikely with the Clubman still around. Moreover, the performance-oriented Cooper S also received one and a JCW is probably underway as well. The reasoning is simple here. Buyers are asking for increasingly larger interiors and the previous Cooper didn’t have much to offer in that department.

It’s not exactly a minivan (though it could become one at this rate), but the roomier interior and added legroom should bring more people into Mini dealerships. What’s more, the Cooper S 5-Door has just started a new career as a family hauler, something the Fiat 500 Abarth, for instance, can’t brag about yet. Hoping Fiat doesn’t get a "bright" idea soon, let’s have a closer look at the third-gen Mini Cooper S.

2016 Mazda MX-5 Has A Perfect 50/50 Weight Ratio: Video

“Simplify, then add lightness” was the guiding principle set forth by Lotus founder Colin Chapman, and his company has (mostly) adhered to that philosophy ever since. But 21-years-ago, Mazda took a page from Chapman’s book when it introduced the first MX-5 Miata. Here was lightweight, open-top sports car in the spirit of British roadsters from the 1960s and 1970s, except it had functional electronics and didn’t burn through all its oil in a week. It also happened to be incredibly fun to drive, even well below the national speed limit.

For the new ND MX-5 Miata, Mazda has rediscovered these values. At 2,332 pounds, the new Miata is over 100 pounds lighter than the car it replaces, but, crucially, that weight is equally distributed evenly between the front and rear axles — a fact that Mazda proves in the video, in which a Miata is wheeled onto a giant aluminum fulcrum and balanced perfectly. (Sure, a set of electronic wheel scales could have been used, but that wouldn’t have been nearly as impressive.)

The new Miata uses Mazda’s Kodo design language, which looks absolutely fantastic. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine sends 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. It should be showing up on dealer lots any day now, and pricing starts at $24,915. We’ll hopefully be getting behind the wheel soon for a full test.

Need for Speed Reboot Announced For This Fall

Fans of the Need For Speed franchise have had a rough year. It has been about that long since news came out that Ghost Games, the Swedish studio that has been handling the NFS games for EA since 2013’s Need For Speed Rivals, was laying off staff and that the layoffs would mean a delay on the next title. But now we finally have word that a new title will be brought out in the fall, called simply: Need For Speed. EA is calling this a “reboot,” which explains the return of the original name, although it isn’t explained in what other way this is a reboot.

There have been a few images so far, a couple of an older Porsche 911, a new Mustang and a Nissan 180SX, all of them with visible modifications. There is also a short video clip showing these cars racing and fleeing from the cops. Pretty standard Need For Speed stuff, and it looks like there will be some impressive graphics as well. More information is said to be coming next month, which we assume will include a longer trailer.

Can-Am Recalls Spyder RT And DS 70 And DS 90 Models Over Multitude Of Issues

The Can-Am Spyder RT has been subjected to another recall, proving that there seems to be no end in sight for the reverse trike’s multitude of issues. Not surprisingly, the latest recall is also fire hazard-related, similar to previous safety concerns that have plagued earlier versions of the model.

Almost 7,100 units of the Spyder RT are affected by the recall, all of which are units made from 2013. Even earlier models, those built from 2008 to 2012, are also being investigated for a similar problem, even though a recall to fix the same issue was already made back in 2012.

As if that’s not enough, the Can-Am DS 70 and DS 90, two ATVs designed for children, are reportedly capable of being faster than what Can-Am intended for these age-specific categories. That might not be too much of an issue for adults, but for young kids, it’s a pretty serious one. The specific details of the problem have yet to be divulged, but it appears that these vehicles are capable of exceeding speeds of 15 mph, which is the legal limit for the age categories that they’re homologated for.

Certain models of the DS 70 and DS 90 are also under threat of malfunctioning brakes, which would be a bigger headache for Can-Am in the event a young child gets hurt from this particular issue.

All in all, 2,385 units of the DS 70 and DS 90 have been tagged for recall with models ranging from as early as 2008 all the way to the current batch of 2015 models.

Porsche's GT5 Trademark: What Could It Be?

News that Porsche was given a trademark for the GT5 name in May 2015 gave birth to rumors that Weissach might be planning to launch a new high-performance model in the future. The big question here is what Porsche model will get the GT5 badge?

It’s quite the mystery, as the iconic 911 has had the GT3 name for more than a decade, and the Cayman has just received a GT4 version. Moreover, the Boxster, also rumored to get a GT variant, regained its Spyder iteration, which is pretty much a GT4 without a rear wing. Squeezing a Boxster GT4 into the current lineup would be next to impossible. This leaves us with only three existing models that have yet to spawn GT versions, none of which are sports cars. I’m obviously talking about the Panamera sedan and the Cayenne and Macan SUVs.

But do any of these performance family cars really need a GT5 version with a bigger focus on track performance? After all, the Panamera and the Cayenne are already available in GTS specification, while the Macan is likely to get one too.

Could Porsche use this new trademark for a brand-new nameplate or an upcoming four-cylinder version of an already existing car? Obviously, there’s more than just one scenario here. We decided to have a closer look at them and decide which might make better sense for the GT5 trademark. Also, each of the speculative models below come with their very own rendering courtesy of our talented artist.

Race Version Of The Ford GT Will Debut At Le Mans

The highly anticipated race-spec version of the new Ford GT will make its global debut at the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans. That’s the word from Motorsport, which adds that the race car has already made its first outing on the track earlier this month. The GT was reportedly driven by Scott Maxwell at the Calabogie Motorsports Park in Ontario on May 16th and 20th.

There’s no word as to what development stage the car has reached, but it is believed that the same example will be on display at Circuit de la Sarthe next month, when Ford will also make an official announcement for its 2016 racing program. The same source revealed that the race-spec Ford GT will be powered by a Roush Yates EcoBoost, 3.5-litre V6 similar to that used in the Riley & Scott Daytona Prototype car. The mill will mate to a Ricardo gearbox.

The car is likely to make its racing debut at the Daytona 24 Hours in January 2016, but a Petit Le Mans appearance in early October is also possible.

Chevrolet Invests $175 million In 2016 Camaro Plant

Chevrolet has announced an investment of $175 million to help produce the sixth-generation Camaro, adding new equipment, tooling, and jobs. Combined with other investments made over the last four weeks, the $175 million is part of a larger $5.4 billion investment GM pledged for US facilities late last month. The $5.4 will be spent over the course of the next three years, and so far, $2.8 billion has been spent.

Part of the investment incorporates new paint systems for Camaro-specific body colors, including Summit White, Bright Yellow, and Red Hot, plus two new robotic framers for better “dimensional control” and highly accurate production. Furthermore, a second production shift will resume later this summer at GM’s Lansing Grand River Assembly Plant in Michigan, accounting for the addition of some 500 jobs.

“I may be the luckiest mayor in America today,” said Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero in a press release. “Gearing up for full-scale production of the legendary Chevy Camaro is a new high point in the more than two decades of extraordinary partnership between the City of Lansing, General Motors and the UAW.”

So far, $783.5 million of the $5.4 billion is slated for production facilities in Michigan. “General Motors is investing in Michigan – and Michiganders,” Gov. Rick Snyder said in a press release. “Our state’s automotive heritage and expertise is known around the globe, and GM and its workforce are a major part of that. We’re going to continue to ensure the best environment for GM, the auto industry and all other industries to grow and thrive, creating more and better jobs. That includes connecting and developing the talent to keep the economic engine running at full speed long into our state’s bright future.”

2018 Porsche Panamera Caught On The Road: Video

Although it isn’t due to arrive Stateside until 2017, the next-generation Porsche Panamera keeps losing camouflage with each public appearance. We made contact with some of the sedan’s new exterior features in January 2015, when the Panamera traveled to Sweden for some cold winter testing, and now we stumbled across a new video showing the car with far less camouflage stuck to its body.

Unfortunately, the footage showing a black Panamera passing quite fast in front of the camera is not too revealing. But while small details may be hard to distinguish, the short clip does confirm that the next-gen sedan is both sportier and more elegant than its predecessor. A closer look also reveals beefier wheel arches, a reshaped C-pillar, and what appears to be a longer rear door.

What you can’t see in the video but we already know for a fact is that the second-gen Panamera rides on Volkswagen’s MSB platform, which enabled Porsche engineers to make the new sedan about 200 pounds lighter than the outgoing model. Under the hood, look for an array of six-cylinder engines, a newly developed, twin-turbo V-8, and an updated hybrid drivetrain. What’s still a mystery is whether the Panamera GTS will continue with a naturally aspirated mill or not.

Keep it locked here for more details, we’ll be right back as soon as we have them.

2016 Chevrolet Cruze Will Debut On June 24

Starting at the very beginning of the year, Chevrolet has been on a whirlwind pace overhauling its car lineup. First there was the 2016 Volt at the Detroit Auto Show followed by the 2016 Malibu and Spark in New York, and then there was the recent introduction of the 2016 Camaro. Now, GM’s volume-selling brand is about to introduce the next generation of its top-selling car as the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will be officially unveiled on June 24th.

Little is known about the next-gen Cruze intended for the U.S., but the China-spec Cruze (shown above) was unveiled last year at the Beijing Motor Show. Spy shots show that the U.S.-spec model will have a similar overall shape as China’s Cruze, but it will wear almost completely different sheet metal looking like a mix between the new Volt and Malibu designs.

One thing that is certain about the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is that it will offer compatibility with both Android Auto from Google and Apple CarPlay. These innovative in-car connectivity technologies will be offered in 14 Chevrolet cars, trucks and crossovers with the exception of the Sonic, Trax and Traverse bringing a new level of safety and convenience to the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system.

The interior shot of the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze that was used to announce Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems does give a glimpse at the car’s center stack. In fact, it looks almost identical to the Chinese version of the Cruze suggesting that while the exterior designs will be very different, the interiors could have a lot in common.

Video: Super Street Magazine Pits Kawasaki Ninja H2R Against Trio Of Supercars

The eternal question is car vs bike has been asked so many times the answer now probably lies somewhere in between the two protagonists. But even then, that hasn’t stopped people from testing it out for themselves, which is what Super Street Magazine did recently when it rolled out a Kawasaki Ninja H2R superbike and pitted it against a troika of supercars headlined by the Bugatti Veyron and also includes a McLaren 12C and a heavily modified Nissan GT-R that packs a walloping 1,350 horsepower.

As you can imagine, the Ninja H2R did quite well for itself, as it should since according to Super Street, this is the only H2R that Kawasaki USA has as of the moment. And let’s face it, even if it does produce just 300 horsepower - peanuts compared to what the three supercars have under their respective hoods - the much lighter superbike can be just as quick on a drag strip as any of its four-wheeled counterparts.

Actually, the H2R beat two out of the three supercars it competed against and the third one, even if it lost, was closer than most people thought. Care to venture a guess which of the three supercars bested the H2R on the drag strip?
I’d spill the beans but that would mean taking out the fun of actually watching the video for yourselves. Trust me at least when I tell you that you’d be surprised by the results.

Or maybe not depending on what you’re opinion is of aftermarket upgrades.

Walter Röhrl Drives The New Porsche 911 GT3 RS: Video

It’s obvious from just looking at the 2016 Porsche 911 GT3 RS that it is a machine that means business. But in order to get a complete picture of just how serious a machine it really is, one needs to see it on the track and in the hands of a professional. And while the word “professional” is entirely inadequate for someone of Walter Rohrl’s skill level, you get the idea. In this video we can see him taking the car around a track, and from the occasional sounds of protest coming from the tires, it’s safe to assume that he’s got it right at the edge.

The video gives us a few different views of the action, so as to form a more complete picture. Possibly the most entertaining of these is when we get a look at Rohrl’s face as he’s driving, betraying no emotion whatsoever. Then again, for someone like him, this isn’t exactly a difficult task. Perhaps the lack of a third pedal made him bored. The other views show some pretty impressive laps, although the video description doesn’t say which track it is.

2015 Hyundai Sonata Is The First To Offer Android Auto

The next generation of in-car connectivity is finally here, and it is one that comes with a focus on safety by reducing driver distractions. The newly redesigned 2015 Hyundai Sonata will begin offering Android Auto as standard equipment on cars equipped with a navigation system. As for buyers who have already purchased their 2015 Sonata, the system will be available later as a software update – again though, only on cars with navigation.

Of all the benefits of Android Auto, the biggest is that it allows drivers to fully integrate their Android smartphones (equipped with the latest Android “Lollipop” operating system), meaning that now you can leave your phone alone while you’re driving. Actually, drivers have no choice: when the car and phone are paired properly, the smartphone’s screen is automatically locked. To use the functions of their phones, drivers can use the audio controls on the steering wheel, the touch screen or even voice recognition. The downside is that it must be tethered through a USB cord to take full advantage of the technology, but the numerous safety benefits far outweigh this minor inconvenience.

Android Auto is able to run various Google Apps such as Google Maps, Google Play and Google Now, but it can also run many third-party apps such as iHeartRadio, TextMe, NPR, Stitcher and Skype. After the new Sonata, Android Auto will be available on a growing number of Hyundai cars and crossovers. As for the software update, current owners of the 2015 Hyundai Sonata can have Android Auto installed at no charge by their dealer, and later this year they’ll be able to do the download for free by themselves.

IndyCar Grand Prix Of Boston In 2016

IndyCar will expand to include a new race in Boston for the 2016 season, the series’ governing body announced earlier this month. The first ever Indy race to be contested in the area will take place on September 4th (Labor Day weekend) on a 2.25-mile temporary street course consisting of 11 turns. It will be staged at least until 2020. The Grand Prix of Boston will thus become the fifth IndyCar event on a street course, joining those in St. Petersburg, Long Beach, Detroit and Toronto.

"The level of enthusiasm we have received from the Boston community has been phenomenal and we look forward to showcasing the Verizon IndyCar Series on Labor Day weekend in 2016," said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co, the parent company of IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

The temporary street course will feature "at least six passing spots," according to IndyCar president Derrick walker, as well as parallel pit lanes and a section that runs under a hotel complex, two unique features for an Indy track.

The Grand Prix of Boston is the fourth race confirmed for the 2016 IndyCar Series season as of May 2015. The other three are the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach, Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis, and the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. The full schedule is expected to include at least 16 venues.

Lamborghini Officially Confirms Urus For 2018

After years of speculation and rumors, Lamborghini made it official today that it’s moving ahead with plans to produce a new SUV. The new model will be built in Italy at Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata plant and will be introduced as a 2018 model.

"The introduction of a third model signifies for us the beginning of a new era," said Lamborghini boss Stephan Winkelmann in a statement to Reuters and Automotive News. It’s the second SUV from Lamborghini, after the LM002 pseudo-military vehicle, which was produced from 1986 until 1993.

The new project represents an enormous investment over the course of the new model’s life cycle. Lamborghini aims to build around 3,000 annually, which would more than double its total 2014 output. As such, Lamborghini will hire 500 new employees and nearly double the size of its factory in Sant’Agata.

As we reported earlier this month, the project is being partially funded by about €100 million worth of tax breaks and incentives, courtesy of the Italian government. The deal has been in the works for a few weeks and was made official when Winkelmann and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi met in Rome to sign a letter of intent.

Rolls Royce Aims At Younger Buyers

It is a common lament of carmakers that they have a difficult time reaching out to younger buyers. This is mostly an issue for companies that make cheaper cars, as those tend to be the only ones young people would potentially be able to buy. It’s not something you usually hear from companies like Rolls-Royce, and yet it is exactly what the company is now doing, at least in some markets. This news comes by way of the Korean media, and this is fitting, as Rolls-Royce tends to sell to a younger crowd in Asia. In fact, the average age of Rolls-Royce buyers has dropped from 53 to 45 globally over the last five years, with much of this being attributed to purchases by young tech millionaires in South Korea.

Part of this is due to the cars that Rolls-Royce is offering these days, with the Ghost and especially the Wraith being more attractive to younger buyers. But Rolls-Royce is also experimenting with different ways of marketing the cars. Where previous parties thrown by the company have been black tie affairs aimed at getting older buyers into a Phantom, events aimed at Wraith buyers have employed DJs.

Nissan Almost Axed the Maxima Four Years Ago

The 2016 Nissan Maxima goes on sale in June, 2015 with an impressive, concept-like design and Infiniti-like premium interior features, but the sports sedan almost didn’t happen. That’s the word from Pierre Loing, vice president of Nissan’s U.S. product planning, who told Auto News that the Japanese brand was planning to kill the nameplate just four years ago.

Nissan pondered the idea in 2011, only a couple of years after it had introduced the seventh-generation Maxima. Amidst hiking fuel prices and an industry that was still struggling to recover after the recession, Nissan shifted most of its resources to building more compact and fuel-efficient cars. It introduced the electric Leaf and had already began to focus on cost-efficient, global platforms. As it was sold almost exclusively in North America, the Maxima started to make less sense in the company’s big picture.

Fortunately, Loing stepped in to make a case for the big sedan and convinced Carlos Ghosn to greenlight the an eight-gen car in early 2012.

"A lot of people assume it was a forgone conclusion that, of course we will continue with another Maxima. But frankly, the forgone conclusion at that moment was that there would not be another Maxima," said Loing. "There were big reasons to fight for it," he added, including the fact that it is Nissan’s longest-selling nameplate in the U.S.

He even went as far as to say that the Maxima has better name recognition than the Nissan brand itself. Axing it would’ve taken a big chunk out of the brand’s image in the U.S.

Porsche Reveals 2015 Le Mans Livery

With less than three weeks left until the green flag drops for the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans, Porsche has unveiled the liveries of the three 919 Hybrids set to compete in the LMP1 class. Unlike last year’s race, where Porsche fielded cars painted in the same colors, this year’s event will bring three 919s with distinct liveries on the starting grid.

While the No. 19 car driven by Earl Bamber, Nico Hulkenberg, and Nick Tandy will use the same colors Porsche chose for its big return in 2014, the others will sport red and black liveries.

The red No. 17 car focuses on Stuttgart’s tradition at Le Mans and pays tribute to the 917 KH model that brought Porsche its first win on Circuit de la Sarthe in 1970. The "Salzburg Design," short-tail 917 was also finished in red with white stripes. The No. 17 919 will be shared by Timo Bernhard, Brendon Hartley, and Mark Webber on the track.

The third car comes wrapped in black and white stripes in a nod to the road-going 918 Spyder and the technology the 2015 919 Hybrid shares with it. The race car is also an homage to the black 918 that set a new record for production cars at the Nurburgring Nordschleife in September 2013. This 919, wearing No. 18, will be driven by Marc Lieb, the man who drove the 918 to its record lap, Romain Dumas, and Neel Jani.

Michelin Invites Fans To Enter Social Media Contest

French tire maker Michelin has officially launched a social media photo contest, giving motorcycle riders a chance to win a set of new Michelin tires. All it takes is for said riders to share their riding experiences to the Micheline Facebook page where fans of the company will be given a chance to vote for their favorite photo. It seems easy and simple enough and for the most part, it actually is.

The only requirement, it seems, is for the photos to capture the true essence of what it means to be a motorcycle rider. It’s a subjective requirement, but since Michelin is leaving it up to its own fans to determine the winner, a little subjectivity certainly wouldn’t hurt in determining who gets to win the aforementioned set of Michelin motorcycle tires valued up to $500.

Those who are interested in entering the photo contest are also required to add the hashtag #MichelinOnMyMoto so that their respective photos become eligible for the competition. The contest runs from May 22, 2015 through June 20, 2015 and is only open to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia. Those who enter are also required to be at least 18 years old at the time of entry and must have a valid driver’s license.

The whole premise of the contest shouldn’t be too difficult to comprehend so there should be a steady amount of entries coming in until June 20, 2015. Remember, if you do decide to throw your photo into the proverbial hat, make sure that you follow all the rules and regulations of the competition.

Latest McLaren P1 Built By MSO Features Superman-Inspired Color Scheme

It’s hard to find two supercars that are cooler than the McLaren P1. Some would nominate the LaFerrari, while others would go with the Porsche 918 Spyder. I, on the other hand, would nominate two cars: the McLaren F1 or a P1 that’s been customized through the McLaren Special Operations (MSO) division.

With the F1 significantly rarer and more expensive than the P1, an MSO-customized P1 seems to be the more attainable dream, to those who have already booked a P1 and have more than $1 million to spare, of course. As you may already know, all P1s have been spoken for since late 2013. But because building one is a laborious process, McLaren is still busy delivering the final batch of cars of the total 375-unit production run. And because the P1 has proven more popular for personalization than another supercars, one-off models keeping rolling out MSO’s shop in England.

The latest P1 by MSO to come into the spotlight is this gorgeous, blue-painted example built for David Kyte, chairman and founder of Hamilton Court FX. As usual, it’s the paint that makes it unique. While the glossy blue wrap already makes it stand out among other P1s, the bright-red stripes on its side skirts, front bumper, trunk lid, doors, and wheels make it that much more stunning to look at. The uniqueness continues on the inside, where the supercar received a light-blue center console and extra carbon-fiber and Alcantara.

The hybrid drivetrain remained unchanged, but that’s far from disappointing given total output sits at 903 horsepower and 1,100 pound-feet of torque.

Lamborghini Asterion LPI 910-4 Presented At Villa d'Este: Video

It would be wrong to describe the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este as a classic car show. It is in a whole other league of classic car event, along with the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, though the Villa d’Este event is much older, and the model on which the Pebble Beach event was built. These events have become so popular that big that manufacturers now bring concepts, the same as they do for big international auto shows. Sometimes these are new concepts, but usually they’re cars that have been shown before, brought to give the mega-rich attendees of the event a closer look.

This year, Lamborghini brought the Asterion plug-in hybrid hypercar concept that was unveiled toward the end of last year. The video will give us a much better look at it, and we’ll hear the 5.2-liter V-10 (admittedly not a new engine) being fired up. We get some good looks at the details as well, although the somewhat questionable looks of the car are still very much present. But the car does look very much at home on the hotel grounds, which is surely why Lamborghini chose to bring it.

1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Zagato Named Best Of Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este

The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este has got to be one of the coolest and most unique car events in the world right now. Built 1568, the Villa d’Este Hotel on the shores of Lake Como in Italy is the backdrop for this extraordinary and intimate event, which welcomes classic cars and motorcycles, as well as modern concepts and race cars. Among others, 2015 brought out the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage concept, a 1961 Ferrari GT SWB California Spider that sold at auction for over $11 million, and Cameron Glickenhaus’s SCG003, fresh off its finish at the Nürburgring 24 hour race.

But, the best in show award went to this pristine 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Spider, owned by American collector David Sydorick and wearing coach-built bodywork from Zagato. The 8C was Enzo Ferrari’s race car of choice before he started building his own several years later. With a 2.3-liter inline-eight cylinder engine, Alfa Romeo never intended the 8C 2300 to be a road car, but eventually decided to sell it as a rolling chassis due to high demand. Wealthy owners then took their 8C chassis to Carrozzerrias (coach builders), like Pininfarina, Touring, or, in this case, Zagato, to have them fitted with bodies of their choosing.

Indian Scout

2015 indian scout01

Way back in the day – 1920 to be exact – Indian released what was arguably its most important motorcycle, the Scout. Those of you in the ’old school’ will recognize this model from the ’Harley v. Indian’ wars fought on the hill-climb and flat-track circuits, as well as the streets. Polaris bought the Indian Motorcycle name in 2011 and set about the business of reinventing the brand, so it is no surprise that the Scout was high on the list of priorities. The 2015 Indian Scout represents Polaris’ efforts to tie the old in with the new, and it embodies the rich heritage of the model family while simultaneously moving into contemporary design and technology.

1952 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta Auctioned For About $7.5 Million

With the notable exception of homologation specials, classic race cars don’t usually sell for really noteworthy sums of money. This is partly because they often aren’t street legal, and also because they simply don’t offer the glamour or good looks of high-end sports or grand-touring cars. So when a race car does sell for several million dollars, it’s the sort of thing which gets our attention. At RM Sotheby’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in Italy, a 1952 Ferrari 212 Export Barchetta race car went for $7.5 million, a huge sum of money for anything, but especially a race car.

Though Enzo Ferrari had been involved in car making and racing for many years prior, the company as we know it today has only existed since 1947, so this 212 Export is a very early model. It is a rare model, with only 28 units made, and even the 212 Inter (the road-going model that the racer is based on) only had 82 units produced. And this particular car is a matching number example that is Ferrari Classiche certified.

Stirling Moss' Porsche RS-61 Will Be Auctioned At Goodwood

It’s not everyday you have the chance to buy a car from a living legend, much less an incredibly rare Porsche race car, but here we are. Built in 1961, this 1-of-14 Porsche 718 RS 61 is being sold on behalf of Sir Stirling Moss at the Bonhams Auctions event at the 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed in June, where it’s expected to fetch a staggering $3 million.

Sir Stirling has quite a history with the Porsche 718. He shared a 718 RS 60 (the nearly identical predecessor to the RS 61) with Graham Hill at the 1961 Targa Florio, a race won by 718s in 1956, 1959 and 1960. Unfortunately, the car’s transmission failed while leading, just a few miles from the finish line. He teamed up with Hill again in a 718 RS 61 for the Nürburgring 1,000 kilometer race. Amazingly, it snowed during the race (as if the Nürburgring weren’t terrifying enough), but the lightweight Porsche handled well in the abhorrent conditions. The duo almost worked their way into the lead, when, again, it broke.

Despite, his lousy luck with the car, Moss liked the 718 so much that he bought an RS 61, chassis No. 718-070, for himself a few years ago and drove it competitively in historic events, including Le Mans Classic and the Goodwood Festival of Speed. You can do the same if you’re able to find a few million dollars in your couch cushions.

Porsche Carrera GTS Goes From Racetrack To The Road: Video

It’s difficult to look at the 2015 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS without thinking that it exists solely because of Porsche’s obsessive need to make a car for every hyper-specific budget and taste. And the truth is that’s probably was why it was created, but that doesn’t matter, because Porsche has still made an excellent car. Slotting in between the S and the GT3, the GTS actually hits that sweet spot between race car and street car, which the S falls short of and the GT3 overshoots. But this is something that not a lot of people are aware of, thanks to the fact that not counting special editions, there are now 25 different variations of the 911 and you need to be quite the fanboy to keep them all straight.

Porsche has put out this video, seemingly just to remind us of just what the GTS is and why it exists. It’s the sort of thing that would be entirely unnecessary for a lot of automakers, but is a logical move for Porsche, and it’s not as though we could ever object to well-produced footage of a 911 on a race track.

Chevrolet Announces Price Cut For Camaro Z/28

If you’re in the market for a Camaro Z/28, you might want to know about Chevrolet’s recent discount for the track-focused muscle car. Chevy is slicing the Z/28’s sticker for both the 2014 and 2015 model years. According to GM Authority, 2015 models get a $2,000 discount, while 2014 models can be had for $4,000 less. This means the cars now cost $70,350 and $68,305, respectively.

The discount is reportedly available for nearly 600 Camaro Z/28s parked in GM dealerships, two dozen of which are 2014 vehicles.

You’d better hurry though, discounts for both models are only valid through June 1st, which means you have less than a week to book one. What’s more, Chevy will only accept bank checks for this offer. No finance and no lease!

As a brief reminder, the Camaro Z/28 was launched for the 2014 model year as the most track-focused version of the fifth-gen pony car. Production was limited to only 500 units for the 2014 model year. For 2015, the Z/28s final year on the market, Chevy plans to assemble 2,500 examples.

The company has yet to confirm whether the newly released sixth-gen Camaro will spawn a Z/28 variant, but the nameplate’s return is more than likely. However, a new Z/28 might not arrive until 2017.

Audi TT RS Mule Caught Testing: Spy Shots

Already available in Europe, the third-generation Audi TT has yet to arrive in U.S. dealerships. And by the time the new coupe starts roaming North American streets later this year, Audi may have already launched the hot TT-RS version. The beefed-up compact just hit the streets for a new testing session, suggesting its debut is closer than ever.

How do I know this is the TT-RS and not the milder TTS as suggested by the prototype’s body details? Well, the spy photographers that took these shots managed to take a closer look at the brake calipers and reported each has an "RS" logo painted over. Moreover, a sticker on one of the rear dampers carried the same lettering. The third hint lies in the bigger brake discs, which you can see in the photos above and below. Nice try, Audi!

While the next TT-RS’ styling isn’t much of a mystery — look for a slightly more aggressive TTS with aero updates front and rear — the engine Audi is working on is. Most reports claim the souped-up coupe could get either the familiar 2.5-liter five-cylinder found in the RS3 or a heavily modified 2.0-liter turbo-four, likely similar to the one in the Golf R400. If I were to take a guess, I’d say Audi will keep the five-pot and simply upgrade it to deliver around 400 horsepower. That would be a significant improvement over the TT-RS Plus and its 355 horses.

Shelby GT350 And GT350R Pricing Leaked

About a month ago, a leaked document revealed prices for some of the options offered with the upcoming 2016 Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang. However, the leak didn’t provide any hints as to how much Ford will ask for a GT350 before options. The wait ends today with yet another pricing sheet that surfaced the Interwebz a bit earlier than FoMoCo probably wanted. The leak comes via the Mustang6G forum and quotes a suggested retail price of $47,870 for the Shelby GT350. The sticker doesn’t include destination and the gas guzzler tax, which would add an extra $2,125 for a total of $49,995.

For the more track-focused GT350R, customers would have to pay a $13,500 premium for the 920A equipment group. This means the GT350R would start from $61,370. Adding delivery and taxes would take the sticker to $63,495.

This new sheet lists prices for the black roof, over-the-top racing stripe, and Triple Yellow paint options too, but they remain unchanged from the previous leak. What’s new here is the optional car cover, priced at $375.

Another price list posted on the same forum says the base Shelby GT350 will cost $62,599 in Canada. For the GT350R, Canadian buyers would have to pay $79,499. Destination and delivery will add another $1,650 according to the leak.
