Kia Niro

Kia keeps hitting homerun after homerun with the new models it has been releasing lately, and it looks like the next addition to the lineup could be in one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments. When it comes to the red-hot subcompact crossover market, the Kia Soul is probably the closest thing Kia has to compete in, but a more traditional crossover is about to slot in below the compact Sportage.

Based on these images, it looks like the new model is very similar to the KX3 Concept that was unveiled at the 2014 Guangzhou Motor Show in China (itself inspired by the 2013 Kia Niro Concept). Although it was unveiled in concept form, it looks like many of the design cues (from what we can see) will be carried over to the production vehicle.

The KX3 was initially intended for production in the China market only, but this vehicle was spotted testing in Germany, which hinted that the South Korean automaker might have other markets in mind. Having released two renderings of the model, Kia confirmed that it will be named Niro and sold globally starting 2016.

“Our new model is designed to offer buyers everything they could want from a compact SUV in terms of practicality and styling, while providing the typically low running costs associated with a dedicated hybrid powertrain. By encouraging our engineers to take a ‘blank canvas’ approach, we have tried to develop a car that will appeal to a broader range of consumers," said Hyoung-Keun Lee, CEO of Kia Motors Corporation.

Updated 11/16/2015: Kia droppd first two teaser images for its new Niro - labeled by the company as a Hybrid Utility Vehicle (HUV). The model will be unveiled next year and will be put into production in late 2016.
