Kia keeps hitting homerun after homerun with the new models it has been releasing lately, and it looks like the next addition to the lineup could be in one of the fastest-growing vehicle segments. When it comes to the red-hot subcompact crossover market, the Kia Soul is probably the closest thing Kia has to competing, and these recent spy shots indicate that Kia is clearly looking at a traditional crossover to slot in below the compact Sportage.
Based on these images, it looks like the new model is very similar to the KX3 Concept that was unveiled at last year’s Guangzhou Motor Show in China (itself inspired by the 2013 Kia Niro Concept). Although it was unveiled in concept form, it looks like most of the design cues (from what we can see) will be carried over to the production vehicle. The KX3 was initially intended for production in the China market only, but this vehicle was spotted testing in Germany, which could suggest that the South Korean automaker might have other markets in mind.
With the exception of the luxurious K9 sedan, Kia does not seem to be using its alphanumeric model names outside of Asia, so if this crossover does make it to the U.S. or Europe, odds are that Kia could introduce the Niro name for a production model.
