How Will Auto Safety Ratings Change In The Future?

Audi R8 V10 Plus Vs. Porsche 911 Turbo S: Video

The Porsche 911 Turbo S and the Audi R8 V10 Plus may be distant cousins, but there’s no mistaking that the two everyday supercars regard each other as the other’s biggest rival. On the technical side, both the 911 and the R8 V10 have their advantages. The R8 V10, for instance, has more power at its disposal with 602 horsepower on tap. The 911 Turbo S, on the other hand, isn’t quite there at “just” 552 horsepower.

But if this comp is based this strictly on output, then what’s the point of continuing, right? The truth is that picking between the 911 Turbo S and the R8 V10 Plus is like picking between two equally potent exotics. You really can’t go wrong with either one, but in case you’re struggling to make a choice, the latest episode of Evo’s “Deadly Rivals” series should give you a clearer idea on what both cars have to offer.

Evo road test editor Dan Prosser takes the helm on this episode and put both the 911 Turbo S and the R8 V10 on a gruelling test run. Both left impressionable marks on the Prosser, resulting in what can only be described as a dead heat comparison. If you want something that’s a little more refined, the 911 Turbo S can fill that void. But if you’re looking for something that’s a little edgier to drive, the R8 V10 Plus is as good a supercar as any to get you where you need to go.

Audi "The Forecast" Commercial: Video

’Tis the season for heartstrings to be pulled, and Audi is no exception. The all-wheel drive specialist lives for bad weather in the wintertime, and highlights the virtues of its quattro all-wheel drive system in a new television ad entitled "Forecast."

The well-produced extended-cut ad seems like it might be more at home occupying a pricey Superbowl ad slot. It’s a refreshing contrast to the usual flurry of manufacturer’s ads showing cars with giant gift bows on them, not-so-subtly hinting that your loved one would appreciate a Lexus or a Lincoln under the tree. "Forecast" is one of those ads that lets the product sell itself. In fact, there’s no hard sell at all, and most of the screen time is devoted to a lonesome patriarch and his dog who are facing the prospect of a solitary holiday thanks to an unexpected blizzard.

You can probably guess the rest. Check out Audi’s Christmas "Forecast," and don’t worry, we’re sure it’s just the onions someone was chopping in the next room that have gotten into your eyes.

Mercedes-Benz Launches "Elf-Driving" Technology Just In Time For Christmas: Video

Rumors about Mercedes-Benz and AMG planning to build self-driving vehicles have surfaced the Interwebz since early 2015, but it’s no longer a mystery that the Germans have been experimenting with the technology for many years now. While it has yet to introduce a mass-production vehicle that’s able to travel without driver input, Mercedes has come up with another technology that keeps humans away from the steering wheel: the elf-driving automobile.

"Using the very latest in elf-based technologies, Mercedes-Benz owners will now be able to let go of the wheel and let their elf-driving vehicle take over," Mercedes said in the brief description that comes with the video, which shows several owners getting excited while their elves drive them to their destinations.

Confused yet?

Well, we’re still four months away from April Fools’ Day, but the reason why you spent all morning unpacking gifts and eating candy canes is because it’s Christmas Day! Hence the elves, the cheerful attitude, and the gingerbread tasting at the end of the video.

Yup, no need to panic, this is just a holiday commercial and your next car won’t come with an elf to take the pleasure of driving away from you.

Joking aside, having someone drive your car for you during the holidays isn’t a bad idea. It’s that time of the year when you have a lot phone calls to make and texts to send, not to mention that you might want to enjoy some eggnog. And, we know none of those activities are recommended while driving. Granted, you probably won’t be able to find an elf to drive your car for a week or so this time of year, so make sure you drive safe and opt for a cab should you celebrate Christmas with a pint or two.

Ideal Cars To Use This Christmas

The Christmas season is now in full swing and, as many of you can attest, the roads have been pretty jam-packed the past few days. It’s a tricky situation to navigate, and while we are celebrating Christmas today, it’s reasonable to expect that the roads are going to be just as bad over the next few days. Obviously, many of us are in different positions. Some have yet to complete their holiday shopping. Some probably have yet to start. There are also those who celebrated Christmas away from home and are planning to go back to their own addresses. Then there’s the always unpredictable mood of Mother Nature.

All these things could add up to a debilitating late holiday rush. So if any of you find yourselves in the aforementioned positions, be advised that we’ve picked out some cars that would work best in certain conditions.

Not everyone will be fortunate enough to have the specific kind of car they’re going to need should, for example, they get stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic. But in the event that they do find themselves with the right car, at the right place, and at the right time, they should be able to navigate cleanly around the expected rush of the coming days.
These are the ideal cars you might need for certain situations. Good luck on your travels and happy holidays to all of you!

Automotive Christmas Gifts: The McLaren P1s You Can Actually Afford

It’s that time of the year again and no matter how many presents I’ll find under the Christmas tree I known I’ll be a bit disappointed. That’s because Santa can’t bring me the supercar I’m in love with: the McLaren P1 GTR. With the track-only hybrid sold only to P1 owners and the road-going P1 already discontinued, there’s no hope, no matter how hard Mr.Claus and his army of elves will try. I’m sure many of you are in the same situation as me.

But if you’re willing to make a compromise and settle for a P1 you can’t actually climb in, McLaren and several miniature manufacturers have you covered with a range of static and radio-controlled models in many shapes and sizes.

The smallest P1 you can buy for yourself or as a gift for someone else comes in 1:64th scale from Mattel-HotWheels. The miniature is quite small at 75 mm (three inches) long, but it’s available in two of the car’s official colors — Volcano Orange and Supernova Silver. If you want to build your own P1, Lego also created one as part of its Speed Champions series. It’s not as accurate as a diecast model, but at least you can put it together piece by piece.

Slightly larger models, this time around in 1:43 scale (about 106 mm / 4 inches), are available from True Scale Models (TSM), Minichamps, and Tecnomodel. Although TSM’s don’t come cheap at around ‎€80 a pop, they’re quite accurate for the scale. Not to mention they come in many colors and versions, including the camouflaged prototype and the version that set the P1’s impressive Nurburgring lap time.

Fans of radio-controlled models can have a look at Maisto’s new 1:14 replica. It has illuminating headlamps and taillights and a decent amount of details for a plastic toy.

Finally, there’s the 1:8 scale replica (573 mm / 22.5 inches) built by Amalgam, the Rolls-Royce of the modelcar industry. Their creations are as precise as the rear thing and detailing includes the hand-beaten asymmetric bodywork and creases in the fabric of the seats. Unfortunately, Amalgam’s products are also very expensive, retailing for £4,200 (about $6,255) according to its website. I guess this is the kind of scale model P1 owners could easily afford...

Santa's Exotic and Luxurious Sleighs

Nobody really knows how often Santa upgrades his sleigh, but what if he wanted to shop for a new model altogether? Well, over the past five or six years, publications like Car Magazine have challenged automakers to design a new sleigh for Santa. Automakers like Bentley, Land Rover, and even Vauxhall have designed new sleighs for Santa in the past, so needless to say, Santa has had a lot to choose from.

I don’t recall seeing any designs last year, and have only seen one this year. But, when you consider the long list of available sleighs at his disposal, there are still at least a few on standby, just waiting to be plucked from some secret, magical garage that is undoubtedly located somewhere at the North Pole.

Since we haven’t seen too many fresh designs for the 2015, I decided to revisit a few of the sleighs created in the years past. Most of the sleighs are exotic, or out of this world – and one even looks like a fighter jet – but why wouldn’t Santa take advantage of all the latest technology? You may have seen one or two of the designs in the past, but it’s always fun to revisit things like this during the holidays. Which of the following sleighs do you think Santa is going to use this year?

Santa "Switches" To A Mercedes-AMG GT This Season: Video

Santa…. Where do we really start. Every year the man loads up that boring old sleigh and tasks poor Rudolph with his red nose, and his friends, to drag him around the planet. Just how does he manage to hit every “nice” kid on the list? Sure the times zones and planet rotation around the sun help, but even as a kid, I knew there was something more to it.

Just think about this for a minute. A horse generates about 14.9 horsepower, so let’s assume a reindeer can do about the same. Without magic or trickery, that means Santa’s sleigh has about 134.1 horsepower will all nine of his magical reindeer. That’s the equivalent of delivering presents in a slightly modified ’97 Civic. No way he’s hitting every kid on the list with that little power.

Well, the secret is finally out, and Santa hasn’t been using the sleigh (or that ’97 Civic for that matter,) but instead, the big guy is managing to squeeze into a red Mercedes-AMG GT. Now it makes a little more sense. With 465 horsepower, 443 pounds of torque and a time of 3.9 seconds to 60 mph, I think Santa has it made. He probably even makes it home in time for some fresh milk and cookies. There is a little surprise at the end of the video, though, because Santa isn’t all by himself on the road. I bet those magical reindeer managed to get their driver’s license too, but I’ll leave that to you to decide.

Jaguar Designed "F-Sleigh" For Santa

Santa Claus has a pretty unenviable job, even if it means he only has to work for one day out of the entire year. Can you imagine being dormant for 364 days in preparation for that one day where you have to go to millions of miles to drop off presents to the world’s children? It’s a daunting task that I wouldn’t want on my plate. But, Santa’s a real trooper, and if there’s a way a company like Jaguar Land Rover can help good ol’ Saint Nick, it’s going to take the opportunity to do so.

That’s probably a big reason why JLR took the time to develop the F-Sleigh, a newer and fancier sleigh that should be a suitable replacement for his presumably dilapitated, reindeer-powered sleigh. The F-Sleigh recently made its public debut at the London Edition hotel to celebrate the launch of Jaguar’s 2016 merchandise and luxury goods launch. It was presented as an ice sculpture, which doesn’t really help Santa, but the design elements are there for the sleigh to be a useful new ride for Santa this holiday season.

So, what’s cool about the F-Sleigh? Well, everything about it is pretty cool. It has the same silhouette as that of the Jaguar F-Type, albeit with skates instead of wheels.

Considering that Santa prefers traveling in the air, the absence of wheels shouldn’t pose a problem to the F-Sleigh’s overall function. What Santa really needs is a bigger space to accommodate all the presents he’d be lugging around. Fortunately, Jaguar designed the F-Sleigh with a large trunk, or at least larger than what you or me can get on the F-Type. Considering that the F-Type’s trunk can barely accommodate presents for one family, let alone millions, the F-Sleigh’s trunk capacity could prove to be mighty useful for Santa Claus.

Then there’s the sleigh’s engine, which, according to Jaguar, operates under jet power. The British automaker didn’t dive into the details of the engine, opting only to say that it was developed in conjunction with the F-Type’s supercharged motors. Whatever it is that’s lurking under the hood of the F-Sleigh, it’s clear that Santa would have no use for Rudolph and the reindeer gang if he decides to use the F-Sleigh this Christmas.

That or maybe Jaguar actually developed the F-Sleigh as a hybrid that can either run on jet power or reindeer power depending on the situation. Either way, the F-Sleigh looks like a really cool new mode of transport for our beloved Kris Kringle. It even has a red nose and some decorative antlers fixed to the side mirrors! Those are a couple of pretty cool cosmetic details right there.

Top 5 Future Vehicles I Want Santa To Bring Now

With Christmas season upon us, wish lists are long with things we hope the jolly ole man from up north would gift us. No, I’m not talking about your Uncle Buck on your dad’s side, but Saint Nick himself. Sure, things like new camera equipment or a performance parts might top the list of most car-loving folks out there, but what if Santa could reach into the future and deliver a hot new ride that isn’t even out yet?

What would you ask for?

Me, I’m into things with a purpose. Vehicles that go really fast or one that go slow, but can conquer the Rubicon trail usually get elicit more excitement than the average grocery getter. That’s why my list consists of purpose-built vehicles. I will admit, however, there is one vehicle that fills a more daily drier role, but comes with all-wheel drive and more power than its little chassis is normally allotted. What am I talking about? Keep reading to find out.

What 2015 Car Do We Want For Christmas?

The North Pole is, like, really remote and isolated, but you just know Santa has one badass Internet connection. I mean, this is almost 2016 folks – how else is he gonna keep tabs on all of us and figure out if we were naughty or nice? With that in mind, we here at TopSpeed decided to put together a Christmas wish list to give the jolly ‘ole saint some direction before it’s time to load up his sleigh.

Of course, a new car is a pretty big ask as far as presents go, but hey – we’ve all been good this year. I’m pretty sure none of us committed any major felonies, and shoot, it’s not like we did anything outrageous, like cheat on emissions tests…

Right. So next to the sugarplums and candy canes, what sweet surprises are dancing through our heads?

Auto Industry Wish List For Christmas

To say that 2015 has been eventful is selling it really short. Yep, eventful doesn’t even come close to describing the year we’ve had so far. So, as we celebrate Christmas and count down the remaining days of 2015, now seems like a good idea to compile a list of wishes certain members of the industry have as they enter the new year. Maybe if they’ve been good this year, Santa Claus will call an audible and make a last-minute reprieve and grant their wishes for 2016.

Some wishes on this list are from automakers, as thought up by yours truly. These companies didn’t necessarily make these wishes themselves, but if they want a prosperous new year, maybe they should have. Then there are other wishes on this list that are made by fans of certain companies who want to see something from their favorite brands in the upcoming year.

Last but not least, I made a personal wish of my own on what I want to see for 2016. It’s an ambitious one that I doubt will come to fruition, but a wish is a wish for a reason, right? You make one in the hopes of seeing it come true. And if it doesn’t, well, at least I tried.

Continue after the jump to lead the complete wishlist.

You Can Configure Your Own Mercedes Sleigh For Christmas

In previous years, some manufacturers have created their own variation of Santa’s Sleigh – you know to help the big guy get around a little better. Well this year, Mercedes decided to launch a sleigh configurator so that you can create your own sleigh for Santa.

The configurator starts out by offering up three models to choose from: Santa’s Silver Arrow, Santa’s F 015, and Santa’s G-Class. There are several color options to choose from, including Jingle Bells gold and Pine Needle Green. After choosing a color, you can move on to the type of runners you want on the sleigh, and then the four-reindeer drive system you want. Optional equipment includes a safety system, navigation, and an intelligent light system.

I decided to configure my own sleigh, and of course, I had to go for the AMG treatment. As you can see from the image above, I started off with the G-Class sleigh, painted in Jingle Bells gold. The stylish AMG runners should give the sleigh plenty of slide in the snow, and the AMG drive system looks to be more than adequate to get Santa around the globe in a hurry. Notice the powerful red eyes of the AMG reindeer? I also chose the Safety package plus, which gives Santa an angel overhead. The navigation system illuminates the North Star and who can forget the little elf that comes with the intelligent light system. I’m not sure if he can fly or not, so hopefully Santa lets him ride along when airborne.

There isn’t a whole lot to the configurator – it’s not quite like configuring a real AMG, but it’s a pretty cool twist for the holiday season. When you get a chance, check it out here. Merry Christmas.

Ford Wishes You Merry Christmas With Snowkhana 4: Video

Starting with 2012, Ford Europe has released a fun little Snowkhana video around Christmas time each year. Over the years, certain characters like the Abominable Snow Monster and even Buzz Lightyear have made appearances in the video – at some points, being terrorized by Mental Block in the 2012 Ford Fiesta. This year, you’ll see the cameo appearances of the monster again, and Buzz apparently likes riding the Coke trucks like skates because he’s back again, but there is a little more to it.

The coolest part about the video this year, however, is that Santa himself takes to the winter wonderland with his blue Ford Focus RS. The jolly old man even has a run-in with the boys as he drifts around his snowy, Wonderland track. So, why not have a little holiday spirit and check out Snowkhana 4? It’s certainly fun to watch.

I won’t ruin the video for you, there are so many characters, that you have to watch it for yourself. It sure does remind me of my younger years, though. There was nothing better than taking to the streets and drifting in the first big snowfall each year. It takes a lot of delicate maneuvering to drift in the snow without bouncing off of anything, but that is what makes it so fun – plus it’s a lot better than burning off a set of tires every weekend. That said, hit play and watch Santa cause some turmoil in preparation for his big trip around the world. Ho Ho Hokhana!

Bugatti 57sc Atlantic Coupe

What you are looking at here is arguably the most valuable car in the world. That sort of thing is very difficult to pin down, with so few of them in existence and no post-recession sales numbers to look at, but it is generally agreed to be the most valuable car in the world. The Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic has, as a result, come to be seen as one of the ultimate symbols of prewar automotive elegance, more rolling statue than car, and for once that isn’t hyperbole.

I myself once saw the Atlantic belonging to Ralph Lauren on display in an actual art museum (the Cleveland Museum of Art had a whole exhibit dedicated to the Bugatti family in 1999), where it was treated the same as the sculptures on display nearby.

Of course, there are a lot of seriously beautiful prewar cars, some even more rare than the Atlantic, that aren’t nearly so valuable. It’s difficult to say just what it is that makes this one so much more valuable than the rest. There is a combination of different factors at work, and some of them defy explanation. Ultimately, it’s so valuable because someone is willing to pay whatever it takes to own it.
